Here are the basics ... I have lived in South Louisiana since I was born, I don't like it here, never felt at home here. I've traveled to different places in the US, and have always felt drawn to East TN. Origionally I was interested in living in the Sevierville area, which I still would like. But, I suppose I want to make sure I'm not missing any other areas to consider. I live in a town of 32,000 but I do not like larger towns or too small. I'm in the medical field so I wouldn't mind working in a larger city and live in a smaller populated one. Would prefer a town that is dog friendly (I have two huskies) and not tourist based on "partying". I also would appreciate any advice on moving to TN, especially if you have moved there or just any, really. Thanks!

I was born in central Louisiana, but I've lived in California since 1977. I plan to retire in Tennessee, between Cookeville and Crossville within the next few years. This is a nice area. Both Cookeville and Crossville have hospitals, so if you are in a medical field, this might be a good area. Cookeville has around 30,000 people and Crossville has around 10,000 people. All of the goods and services you would ever need can be found in both cities. The Nashville airport is about a 1 hour drive from Cookeville. I hope this helps.

You'll want to stay away from Sevierville. That's a tourist area. Knoxville is a city, but it feels like a town and has lots of nice neighborhoods. I live in an area that feels very much like the small town I grew up in. Great hospitals here, too, and Knoxville is considered the most pet-friendly community in the country.

In addition, Cookeville is building what will be the first of its kind in Tennessee, a 10-acre P.E.T. Care Campus incorporating a leash-free dog park, the humane shelter, a spay/neuter clinic, a pre-adoption play area, and housing for pre-vet university students:

Since you are in the medical field, you may want to check out Kingsport as well. Welmont Health Systems is hiring and growing a lot here! The town is pet friendly, has a dog park and dogs are allowed on the Green Belt as long as they are leashed. The population is 60k but has lots of quiet areas and it is kind of spread out. Just another option for you.

The wife and I are seriously looking at moving to the Maryville area just a few minutes from Knoxville. It has a smaller town feel but was just minutes from Knoxville, Sevierville and the Smokies. We felt it was nice having the tourist area close by to help draw in the family. Our two youngest son's are both in college in medical related fields so I'm hoping they would move to the area or with in 1 - 2 hours of it.

I would also say that you might want to check out Maryville. Even though this did not work out for us, we both loved Maryville and the wonderful people there. Close enough to the mountains, but not a tourist town at all. Every town has needs in the medical field, so you might want to check it out. Just a suggestion...
