American City Business Journals (which owns the Memphis Business Journal and the Nashville Business Journal) did a study new study that gauges small-business vitality in the nation’s top 100 metropolitan markets. Here's how Tennessee's four large metro areas ranked:

22. Knoxville
41. Nashville
60. Chattanooga
87. Memphis

I imagine had Nashville not experienced such a catastrophic flood last year which had a disastrous effect on the area's employment for months, its ranking would've been higher.

Knoxville was well ahead of Nashville regarding unemployment before the flood. In fact, it was ahead of the largest MSAs throughout the entire recession.

That list is good to know. I'll have to study it. As you know, we are having to relocate. It looks like we will probably stay in Knoxville! Perhaps once we find a better location we will have success.

Interesting that they had Knoxville at 40 for last year.

A couple of days later the magazine when further in depth and said, "If you’re looking for the best place to start a small business, the South is the region for you.

Ten of the nation’s 20 best markets for small businesses -- including the four at the very top -- are located in the South, according to the latest On Numbers rankings."
