any suggestions would be appreciated.

My wife and I are retired and don't have a whole bunch of moola to throw around.
We were wondering if we could buy a newer double-wide, close enough to view to the mountains, near town but not too close.

Probably. I'd check the Greenback/Louisville/Vonore area for a little less cost. It depends on how far from the mountains you want to be. Maryville is pretty well developed now, but as you go out 411 southbound the development gets less and less, and land gets less and less accordingly. I'd check out the usual realty sites.

Thanks Phinz,

What I'd like to know is if anyone knows if there's a fairly good spread of stores and gas stations along the open stretches of 411 between Vonore and Newport?

There will be small stores and gas stations, but I've not been on that stretch of road in about a decade or so. Between where 129 turns south off of 411 and Maryville there are several stores/gas stations, but I couldn't begin to tell you what it's like north of Maryville, as I've only driven that route once, and I haven't been past 129 southbound from Maryville in over 10 years. I regularly go to North Carolina via 129, though.
