I had honestly never heard of the place until I looked it up.

It's in Morgan County, which automatically means its very, very rural...and judging by its location on the map, even more rural than most of Morgan County.

It's a very rural, pretty poor county...but incredibly beautiful. It's home to popular hiking/camping at Frozen Head S.P., and a popular spot for rock climbing and kayaking around the Obed River.

Mapquest says its about an hour from both Crossville (pop 10,000+) and Oak Ridge (pop 27,000) and about an hour and a half to Knoxville...so it's quite isolated.

Is that what you're looking for?

I've been to Wartburg and Lancing (going to Frozen Head and the Obed). There are some really gorgeous parts...but some aren't as pretty (several mountains in the area have been scarred by coal mining - Frozen Head being a notable exception).

Interesting tidbit: Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary (no longer in use) once housed James Earl Ray. It's a prison literally built into the side of a mountain. If there was ever an Alcatraz on land, that's it.

Deer Lodge isnt really a town. It is very very rural mostly farms. I have been there a few times to pick up my sis visiting her inlaws and to buy some chickens.

Remember driving curvy, narrow rural roads is not the same as interstate. I would guess 2 hrs to Knoxville airport would be a stretch. Even the closest surrounding towns are very small.

Google maps has a birds-eye view....
It would be close to a 2 hour drive to Knoxville airport. Just under an hour drive to Crossville.

It's actually a little community that is very close to Clarkrange. A little further and you would be in Jamestown which is a nice size town with grocery stores and a Walmart, etc. Deer Lodge is VERY beautiful country and it wouldn't take you long too TOO long to get to 1-40 if you needed something bigger. Lots of little mom and pop places through there. Very quiet and peaceful. Jamestown also has a hospital which is good to know in case it's ever needed.
