very interesting the size of Nashville in the number of counties. metro memphis only has 1 county in tennessee with over 100k people. very interesting. observe congestion and in and around memphis and nashville.

Well really you could take away 8 counties from the Nashville MSA and only lose about 240,000 people.

Trousdale, Cannon, Smith, Macon, Hickman, Cheatham, Dickson, and Robertson Counties = 242,000.

Its really a much smaller metro than it appears.

imo. when memphis decides what type of city it wants to be, it will grow into a great place. nashvilles traffic will eventually strangle itself if they dont learn to manage growth. look at the massive frreway circling the city. the congestion is similar to much larger cities already.

Nashville currently ranks 33rd in the nation for commute time - not bad IMO. The city has developed in a fairly circular fashion so the growth is spread out and not every one commutes from 1 or 2 directions. Plus, if you live in the East you can take the train into work and more lines are being studied. IMO, this is better than Memphis which has primarily developed in only 2 directions (east and south) and does not offer train service.

Memphis is in noway shape or form a poster for smart growth however it does have potential. Imo greater than Nashville.

I dont know anything about the ridership of the commuter line. Is it successful?

I do agree that Nashville's growth pattern is not ideal for the long term. If there is perhaps a good side effect that can come out of higher gas prices, it's that people might want to live closer to the city, which would add some density and infill to the city and the closer suburbs...which would in turn make public transportation more feasible (more people in a smaller area is obviously good for PT).

Nashville's interstate system is actually quite good, because it literally divides the region into almost equal sixths. However, there are some complaints about the method of interchanges (3-way splits) in the inner city...which is true. It creates a big merging traffic problem.

The big area where Nashville lacks, IMO would be better and wider secondary roads, and more 4-6 lane crossing or circular connectors. There need to be more bridge connections on the east side of town, too.



As for the commuter line, last I heard it was doing OK. Not great, not poorly...just middle of the road. It struggled for a while, but now ridership seems to be at an "acceptable" level. Just not at the level that local transit officials hoped, as this was supposed to be a "trial" leg (and an inexpensive one at that). If there is one line that would really work in the Nashville Metro, it would be Murfreesboro-La Vergne-Smyrna-Antioch-Downtown. It would be the farthest line, and it would relieve the busiest interstate in the area.

As it should. That's why I think a Murfreesboro line would work. Can you imagine what people there spend commuting to Nashville per month in gas?

Unfortunately, at the moment, I don't think the Music City Star saves much on the wallet (unless you drive a gas guzzler)...it's more about saving the stress of driving. If they can make it more affordable to ride the train than drive, even more people will use it.

Slightly off topic but - given the increases in population (per this census - there, not off topic! ) why wasn't a line built out towards Rutherford County, instead of Wilson?

Because of the availability of an existing line and minimal construction costs. Also the line passes through Hermitage which is a fast growing and heavily populated part of Davidson County.
