Church Hill
My wife and I just purchased a 200 acre property exactly 6.2 miles, as the crow flies, south of Church Hill in the town of Rogersville. The previous owner, his realtor, and a friend of ours all live in Church Hill. Our friend moved down from NY about six years ago.
Church Hill is quite bustling, considering it's small size. There are several restaurants including the famous Mountaineer Restaurant, a large Food Lion, etc. Once you leave downtown it is all pretty rural, with lots of farms and horse raising. Look south and you see Bays Mountain. Bays Mountain State Park has programs all year long, including a planetarium. Our property includes the highest peak of Bays Mountain.
If you like the quiet rural life, but don't want to be too far from good shopping, etc. (the city of Kingsport is only 15 minutes away, with the mall, the super Wal-Marts, etc), then Church Hill is a wonderful place.

danielz, I have family in Rogersville. It's a nice small town, I've passed through Church Hill many times and can echo your experience with the area as a whole. Though I will say that Kingsport isn't exactly "good shopping" if you're looking for any specialty stores, it's pretty much the Wal-Mart type stores like you mentioned. Knoxville is only a short hike (just over an hour) and has much more in the way of culture, shopping, restaurants, etc.
Bill, sounds like you will enjoy the area.

Well ,for us "good shopping" is getting the necessities without having to go too far. We almost bought a property south of Tellico Plains. There it was 15 miles to anything and 30 miles to most things. Where we are in Rogersville, we only have to go six miles to Church Hill to obtain our groceries, eat out, buy clothes, medicines, gas, etc.
Wish there was a John Deere dealer closer though <G>.

I would love more info about the area. My family is considering a relocation from small town NJ. The taxes and cost of living have gotten out of control here. I want the same small town feel I have here, where I dont worry about crime and feel that my children are safe.

What type of info are you looking for?
We left Albany, NY, cost of living 105% of national average. Here it is 86%. Just like receiving a 19% raise. And you think taxes are bad in NJ? Our town in NY was considering adding a charge to the property tax for each tree on a property! We had one acre with a 27 year old house. Here we have just over 200 acres, an eight year old house, two barns and a big workshop. Taxes are 1/4 what they were on the NY property.
Church Hill is growing rapidly, and the real estate prices are a little high as a result. However there are lots of good, and more reasonable, places nearby. We are six miles from Church Hill, on the other side of Bays Mountain. One of our neighboring properties is for sale right now. It's a mountain farm of about 20 acres with a beautiful log house and a large two-story brick barn.
Crime rates in TN are lower than the national average, and in the more rural areas are extremely low.
If I can answer any other questions, let me know.
