Default Sadly, racism is everywhere to an extent

Well, for starters, I would certainly steer clear of TNLove! LOL! Wow, "some groups have done nothing"? Check up on that cultural history and get back to me.

As for fitting in here, I would tell you not to worry, especially if you're not moving to a very small town in a rural area. Even there it would probably be fine, just might take longer

Good luck!! You sound like a nice family who would be a great addition to any community.

If you mean my post, I am sorry if I gave you the wrong impression. We are a family that is only looking to live in a quiet decent place and get out of the rush, rush, rush life here in Miami, Florida. I want for my grandchildren to grow up in a nice environment with a lesser crime rate than we have here.
My husband is already retired and I am close to doing so (5 more years to go), and my daughter and son in law are looking for the same.
Based on the other posts I have read, I am sure we will be very happy in Tennessee.
Thank you all for your posts and God Bless

Default Very good point

I have lived in Tennessee for 23 years and am continually amazed at these questions about racism. I have lived in two other states and have traveled quite a bit. Why do people think that small towns (with one only race represented) here are different than other places?

I wholeheartedly agree with this comment. So much depends on how you yourself act toward others, what your expectations are, and how you 'carry yourself'. Well said.

I agree, this is a TROLL POST and not even worth the dignity of a response (but here I am responding).

I am seriously getting tired of seeing these type of posts however "Will I fit in the south or will the local KKK contingent burn a cross on my lawn I am a _____ (fill in response "black", "a yankee", "liberal", "gay", "a martian")".

After spending a couple weeks here I am convinced that people base there whole geo-political knowledge of the south on The Dukes of Hazard.

Default ...Europeans invented nearly everything around us...

"There's a reason why Europeans invented nearly everything around us and the East Asians as well. Some groups have done nothing."

TNLove:

Is funny that you say Europeans and East Asians invented nearly everythiing around us -- let me help you brush up on your history. Here are a few African American inventors and inventions...

1. Elijah McCoy (1843–1929) invented an oil-dripping cup for trains.
2. Lewis Latimer (1848–1928) invented an important part of the light bulb — the carbon filament.
3. Jan Ernst Matzeliger (1852–1889) invented a shoemaking machine that increased shoemaking speed by 900%!
4. Granville T. Woods (1856–1910) invented a train-to-station communication system.
5. George Washington Carver (1860–1943) invented peanut butter and 400 plant products!
6. Madam C. J. Walker (1867–1919) invented a hair-growing lotion. Walker grew up poor. But she became the first female African- American millionaire.
7. Garrett Morgan (1877–1963) invented the gas mask AND the first traffic light.
8. Dr. Patricia. E. Bath (1949–) invented a method of eye surgery that has helped many blind people to see.
9. Lonnie G. Johnson (1949–) invented the world-famous watergun, the Supersoaker.

That's just to name a few!

ludacris-

Your list was just a drop in the bucket, but I'm glad you stopped there. To continue would take forever, and probably wouldn't make any difference anyway. TNLove's opinions were probably formed many years ago out of ignorance. A post on this forum, no matter how truthful or well-intentioned, won't change that.

Thanks just the same! My son wrote a report on Garrett Morgan last year. What a fascinating life!

Have a great day ludacris,
akm4

White racism exists everywhere in the USA, not just the South. Sure there are racists in the South. They tend to be a little more "comfortable" with their bias because they live in a majority white region; whereas racists in the North will be less open about their bias and discrimination. It's not unusual to hear someone spew the Arian Nation mantra. It bothers me when people use Christianity to justify their superiority over others; usually those of different ethnicity (non-WASP), race, religion and foreign born. There are some pockets of Arians in the West, who are anti-minority and anti-government. They like their auto-weapons.

If you're worried about racism, pick a community with some diversity. Usually a public college or university town is a good choice. They draw students and faculty from statewide, regionwide and other regional areas of the US including foreign students. Tennessee communities that attract retirees are a good pick too. Retirees come from the Great Lakes, Northeast, Midwest, Florida and Southwest. Tolerance generally exists when there is a healthy mix of locals and newcomers in a community. If you have the time, checking demographics can be helpful. A higher education level in a community is often a good marker for tolerance.

Small towns have their own charm. Newcomers can still be "newcomers" even after living in the community for 10-20 years. I prefer towns in the 10,000 to 35,000 population range. We own a place outside of Cookeville. We love it there. I am anglo and my wife is latina. We've experienced nothing but warm southern hospitality and friendship. We look forward to the day we can close up shop in Southern California and spend more quality time in Middle Tennessee.
