I just can't help myself.....
The word hillbilly is believed to have first appeared in print in the United States in 1900 in a New York Journal article describing the "hill-billie" as "a free and untrammelled white citizen of Alabama, who lives in the hills, has no means to speak of, dresses as he can, talks as he pleases, drinks whiskey when he gets it, and fires off his revolver as the fancy takes him."
See, no hillbillys here, they're all in Alabama!

Mountain city. Is this a good place to raise a family? I like quiet and wilderness settings. hiking, biking, walks... How about schools? I have a 6 and 4 year old. I was interested in a small area. Jobs? My husband works now for USPS and I work for UPS. This should not be a problem anywhere...Any comments....that may help my search for a place..

Well excuse me for asking the "dry county" question. We are from NC, only lived in FL for the past four years, enough time to have been nearly wiped out by hurricane Charley, so it's back north for us. I wanted to know about small towns and how holidays are celebrated, (where we are in FL there isn't much going on,) and festivals....something we miss and before we relocate want to be sure we don't end up with a town full of cranky stuck up people who don't celebrate things like the 4th of July, (except for sitting around the pool drinking,) and if you do find something it's pay pay pay...being in our 60's maybe it's only a pipe dream to think we could find a nice small town with American values and traditions....a place where our grandkids could vist and find a piece of America.
Like I said we do like to have a drink now and then, so I just added the question as to "dry counties," since we arn't familiar with TN, I thought someone would be kind enough to clue us in.
Also....now I don't want to get anyone upset by asking this...but we were wondering about the homestead exemption on property tax....

not a dry county here
i live in greene county and i dont think its a dry county i mean we got some liquor stores and restaurants sell beer and other types of alcohol and its a great county and we celebrate holidays like the 4th of july i mean its nothing HUGE but most of the town goes down to the old walmart parking lot and watch fireworks being shot off from the fairgrounds up on the hill but if you want something bigger there is johnson city about 30 minutes away so really greeneville is great cause its a small town and then there is a bigger city just in the next town over but its a great place and we also have a few really nice golf courses here to
"There is no "homestead" exemption, but low income elderly and disabled persons and disabled veterans may qualify for a rebate of taxes on a specified portion of the value of property used as their residence."- i used google and found this so i hope i helped you in some way if there is anything else just email me at jessica_of_gville@hotmail.com and i will try my best to help you out

Wilderness
Where are you from? Mountain city is a safe, small town. There is a hiking club and they go out for local(within an hours drive) hikes in the spring and summer. The town itself is in a valley. Just outside there are hiking and atv trails. Caliente is an atv trail park(?).
The high school seems to be pretty good. I don't know about the lower grades. There is a good community center for kids after school and on the weekends.
As far as jobs go- UPS is out of Bristol,Va or Johnson City, Tn. Ther is one post office in town but last year there was talk of adding another post office.
We like the town but it is a little different. I would definitely visit first before making any decisions.
Good Luck
Lisa

Having moved to small town Tennessee from Florida some 4 years ago:Here's the deal on small towns in Tennesse in general. After an extensive research into the towns that met my criteria and settling on the "best" one I can say :The views are fantastic; the pace is slow; the people are clanish and if "your not from here" you'll find yourself wondering why you came. There are exceptions to each catagory depending on which small town you choose. But small towns in Tennessee are still run by good ole boys who don't want citizen's to know the deals they are making, the town folks don't want to know either. The papers generally are birthday and o-bits notices, so if you've come from a city environment , I hope you enjoy "not knowing"what's going on. Slow is a given and 8 p.m. may as well be 2 a.m. , nothing open.
So be careful and maybe rent first or you may findout,as I did, why they are "undiscovered" gems.

Have a look at Monteagle,Sewanee, Tracy City,Gruetli-Laager (Swiss community). All of the above are with-in app 10 miles of each other.
Lots of nice things going on around here, street dances, Bear Hollow (dinner theatre), The Stage, National Corn Bread Festival...(you get beans with that too). and Yes, I am a hillbilly.
