I agree with MoMark on this one, go and do what is right for you and what will make you happy! There are going to be nosey people and those who will talk behiond anyones back where ever you go. Just like there will be good parts and bad parts of a town, there are good and bad people in every town.

West TN is primitive...of course you can buy a lot of house there....for me I'll stick with Tampa Bay, Sarasota, and down to Naples, with an occasional visit to my house in LaJolla.....Nashville area is kinda okay for sure...Memphis??? oh no that place suxx

Very interesting thread
Hello everyone, my husband and I are thinking about heading to eastern or middle Tennessee. My husbands family is from Missouri but I am not wanting to be in the middle of tornado country...my family is from Louisiana but we do not want to go there either...we prefer mountains and cooler weather. I do lampworking and my husband is a geologist and likes working with hardwoods.
We want chickens ( I had to get rid of mine even though I am zoned for them because the nusiance law takes preference and the neighbor didn't like hearing crowing...) and horses and geese and I want to do lampwork without having to worry about insurances being canceled because I have a torch on the property etc.
That is the main reason we are moving from California...too many costly laws and lots more on the way....My husband and I are both from northern California. Near the oregon state line.
I just want all of you California haters to know my husband and I cry to see what has become of our beloved state, we hope and pray it does not happen to other states. California is soooo beautiful and has sooo much to offer or did. We really do feel like we have been squeezed out.
So we are putting up the family home of over 50 years that my husbands parents built with their own hands and heading for Tennessee. We are caravaning out with an old used motor home, a truck, horse trailer and a car. The horse trailer is filled with our exotic birds..don't worry..no bird flu and they will be all vet certified before we leave, and an old pooch. We do not even know where to begin looking but some nice people up in Jamestown said we could stay at their campground with our birds, they didn't mind at all and then we will just have to use that as our base camp to look for jobs and a home..Whew! We are thinking we want Knoxville to be our nearest big city,
ay input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
Lorraine

Hello, I am Californian born and raised. I am a conservative but I have never treated anyone unkindly or disrespectfully and I love the good Lord with all my heart. I feel sad to have someone say they hate "Californians" because they could have possibly met everyone in the state, could they? I know a lot of fine folks who would give you the shirt off of their backs, yes, in California!

I live in the heart of East Texas, an area of rolling hills, pine forests and wildflowers. A lot like some of Tennessee. My dad was born near Sunbright and I am related to Sgt. York of World War I fame. I would like to move to the eastern TN area someday. Back to the subject, I travel and have many friends in California, from San Diego to the area north of SF. I enjoy visiting California, but I would not live there on a bet. That goes for all areas of California, and my area is being flooded with California "refugees" also. They seem to be leaving in droves. Must be reasons for that somewhere.

Hi Lorraine! Let me be the first to say Welcome to TN! We love it here. Please don't be mislead. I believe if you stay away from the VERY rural counties, you will not find CA haters, to be honest, in the 10 years I have been here in East TN, I have never heard one bad thing about people from CA. There have been friendly, left handed comments about "Flatlanders", "Floridiots" and Yanks" but really only heard two different farmers complain about "new comers" and I really couldn't blame them as these "new comers" were complaining about smelling the farms, which they CHOSE to buy a home by. So I think everyone that moves here will be fine, accepted and happy if they don't try to change the way of life as it is here.
As far as you wanting farm land for chickens and horses, you may want to look at areas between bigger cities, like counties and towns between Knoxville and Tri-Cities or Knoxville and Sweetwater or Oak Ridge and Crossville. You may have a little bit further to drive to large cities, but will have local shopping, such as grocery stores and farm and garden stores, but you can usually get more land for your money this way.
Just my lil ol' opinion. Hope it helps!

etexbill - You're not around Livingston (TX), are you? . . . the area near the "Escapees RV Group." It sounds like you're somewhere close to them.
