Do you guys hate Californians too?
I'm planning on moving to Franklin from central California because I have family there. Well, and because California isn't exactly receptive to us narrow-minded, judgmental, intolerant members of the vast Christian right wing conspiracy that's ruining the country. I figure I might as well spend my Golden Years with my own kind. I know other states don't like us because we sell our houses at an enormous profit and then move to their state and pay cash and jack up the prices beyond the locals' ability and that makes them hate us all. ** gasp for air** So if I show up with only my dog and my final paycheck, will I be welcome? (I promise not to say 'like' more than once an hour)

I think if you come with a good attitude, and are generally nice, Southerners like me will have no problem with who you are and where you're from. Of course you'll have problems with SOME people, but that goes for anyone, anywhere. I'm from Mississippi but because I don't dress a certain way (t-shirts and ballcaps) and drive a pick-up truck, there are certain people that despise me for no reason.
You'll find if you stay away from the very small towns, you'll eliminate that however, and you'll actually find just as many people from out-of-state as you do from in-state. There's really a great North to South migration going on, so I don't think there's anything for you to worry about.
And with the house prices in California, I don't think rational people can be mad at you for leaving.

I have lived briefly in almost every state[airforce brat]. I have found that people are people. As long as you can get along with others you'll do great.

CA to TN
We moved from Northern CA (Sierras) to Franklin a few years ago. We are progressives, so this might seem like a poor fit for us, according to your post. You may be interested to know that we are very happy here. Our friends and neighbors have been incredibly welcoming. Only one family in our neighborhood has been politically obnoxious to us, and they moved away a few years ago. (Ironically, they came for an annual neighborhood party this past weekend, and, needing a place to park their RV, ended up welcome in our driveway overnight. Life's funny.....) Anyway, Repubs and Dems alike have made this community a great one for our whole family. We coexist pretty peacefully. As with most things, if you show respect, you get it back.
Good luck!

My wife and I will be moving to the Greeneville area after I retire next year. I have made contact with 2 real estate agents who have been very helpfull to us. I ordered the Greeneville newspaper so that we could get to know the views of the people around there. You can learn a lot by reading the local newspaper. I would recomend that everyone do this before you make a commitment to move into a new area.

Never felt "hate"
I am coming from NY and I have never felt hate from Tennesseans- they answer my questions, my numerous emails and concerns are always addressed --regardless if you are West Coast or East Coast-this Tennessee site is always a positive part of my day. Good luck in your search.

I thought it was "Totally" or "Awesome"...
Aw c'mon, you know you want to move because taking 2 hours to drive 10 blocks is intolerable (assuming you are in the Los Angeles area).
I feel your pain. I am also a blue stater with a red state mentality. I want to be with other reds now.

As long as you don't come here and try to change things to fit what you perceive as the way things "should be" or "the way they were in xxxx," then you'll not have a problem. There are too many people who leave places because they have grown tired of the way things are (taxes, people, yada yada yada) and then once they get where they are going, try and turn it into a facsimile of the town they left. This is what I saw from South Floridians who moved to SW Florida (a whole 'nother world at one time).
So, yeah, just assimilate (learn how to pronounce things the way the locals do) and you'll be fine.
