I have passed through the White Pine exit multiple times on my way from Greeneville to Knoxville or anywhere really south of Greeneville on I-81. Honestly, if you are from CA you will be completely cultured shocked. I have actually only been through the community once, but jobs are very hard to come by. You may want to try nearby areas like Jefferson City, Newport, Morristown, or Greeneville.

Been through there myself looking for relocation. if you blink your eye you might miss it. Very small community, don't even remember seeing a grocery store or bank but i could have blinked and missed it. Morristown, Jefferson city and Newport are much bigger towns not too far away.

White Pine is a very tiny town. I believe there's 1 or 2 redlights, and VERy strict 35 MPH speed limit, 1 grocery store, a few banks and a few fast food places and that's it. Morristown is a lot larger and has WAY more stuff, but White Pine is wonderful if you are looking for a peaceful place to raise kids. DO NOT move to Newport if you are not from TN originally, you'll be sorry.

Why is everyone on here always hating on Newport? Yeah, Cocke County and Newport are somewhat rough around the edges, but so are lots of other places in TN.

Well my in laws are not from TN but they just bought a place and moved to Newport. They haven't had any problems with the locals and in fact, have made many friends in the community already.

We almost bought a house in White Pine. Being from Upstate NY, we got sticker shock... We left a home, barn and 5 acres with a value of $ 130K to be offered a home with 5 acres for $250K. GAAACK!! No barn even! We prefer small rural towns, so White Pine appealed to us. It's close to a main HWY so you could zip around. That's a major point in TN (with us anyway) "Be near a main hwy". I say within 10 miles. We looked WAY off the highways and literally found ourselves winding around dust covered ancient logging roads with steep cliffs out my window. Not fun, and the punchline is, people actually lived there! We ended up in Sweetwater. Close enough to I-75 so we shop and function mostly between Athens, Lenoir City and Knoxville. It's perfect for us. However, we looked at homes in Greeneville, Riceville, Rogersville, Chucky, etc. Chuckey is gorgeous, and has an Menonite population. I could go on about each town. But my best advice to you is this: Ask several large Real Estate outfits to see lists of the foreclosed bank owned properties they are listing. C/21, Crye-Leike, Realty Executives, etc. We found a STEAL half what it's worth! ALSO: Try to get a google earth aerial view of where you are going. Topography is important, and if you can, look for homes on County Roads that are numbered. We found that if you aren't on one... you are living on 1 car LANES in many cases. If I can help you further, let me know! I should seriously go into business for relos! Good luck! Dd |
