I had to get used to this problem moving from the West Coast to the Central Plains region. Took some time, but it was easier to learn to live with it than to constantly give myself a migraine fretting over it. It is just a slower pace of life back here, and maybe that's not so bad....maybe too many of us are in too big of a hurry anyway.

BEST - relaxed southern hospitality
Worst - summers are sometimes very humid and hot
I live in Nashville and I love it . I have always always lived here and would never leave . The other cities are great too , Memphis may have the most crime , but is a a great city to call home and has lots of culture . All cities in Tn have their own culture , the only decision you have to make is which one is right for you . For retirement , I would recommend Nashville or Knoxville . Chattanoga would also be a good choice .

What parts of Tennessee are the best & worst for heat & humidity?
We met with a realtor at Fairfield Glade who claimed that heat & humidity are not problems due to the 2,000 ft. elevation of the plateau. Comments?

West Tennessee tends to be worse, followed by Middle Tennessee, then East Tennessee.
The high elevations do help, but as you can gather by reading some of the posts here by folks who live on the plateau or in East Tennessee . . . it's still hot in mid summer in all parts of Tennessee (and the south). The higher elevations tend to be a bit colder in winter as well.
Ask that real estate agent (who may or may not be a Realtor) if they were sweating back in August when we were having record high temperatures.
This year was unusual even for us. Most summers there are several days from mid June to late August where it's really hot and humid and uncomfortable just to be out, but not like this year. However, for the most part the heat and humidity is just something you get used to. I think we're all a little soft now since we live in air-conditioned comfort most of the time.

I ask because I am considering TN as a place to retire. Some tell me to stay clear of Knoxville, Chattanooga, Nashville, Memphis....too big city, too crowded, too much crime, housing getting too expensive.
While others tell me that the smaller towns are too backwards.
Help! Need input from the fine folks of TN!

Best:
1. People are polite and friendly
2. quiet, safe neighborhoods
3. No property crime (My car in S Florida was stolen 2x and the Mercedes logo ripped off by some ridiculous kids)
4. Clean air, no Route 95 with a gazillion car accidents every week
5. Havent met any scam artisits- in S Florida every week, either panhandling or people running up to you in Publix parkingh lot, asking for money, or if they can fix your car
Worst:
Cannot think of anything at the moment.

I read somewhere on this forum that gnats can be a problem. Two questions:
1) Is that true in Fairfield Glade area?
2) If so, what time of the year?
C) If so, are they the tiny ones like I experienced in Michigan ... the kind that get through screens; the kind that fly into our eyes, ears, and nose?

I don't know about the Fairfield Glade area but I know in the Clarksville area, gnats were very much a problem when I lived there. It was mainly during the summer months. The ones I experienced were the really small ones that would fly into your eyes, ears, nose, and also give you a really itchy bite if you didn't swat them away quick enough but at least they didn't itch as long as a mosquito bite.

Depends on your viewpoint. We think it's great because it's a days drive. Of course we're in Iowa now....
The heat? It gets up to 95+- (Heat index 110) here pretty much every summer. Is is that hot there, or is it worse?
