Default Help me plan my vacation, Please!!

We are planning a trip to Richmond, VA Sept 18-21. We plan to stay in Abingdon Sept 21-23. Where should we go next? We have thought about Jonesborough, but then? Is Jonesborough a 2 night stay or could we combine Abingdon with Jonesborough? We have to return home (Nashville area) by Sept 25. We love historical areas, or anything unique. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks!

Are you looking for things to do just in the Tri Cities area? Or anywhere between Abingdon and Nashville?

Anywhere between Abingdon and Nashville. We spent several days last fall in Knoxville and would like to see different areas. I thought about Rugby??

Rugby is beautiful! It won't take you long to see it, though. But they have a couple of nice B&Bs located in old Victorian cabins in the woods. Rugby is also next to Big South Fork National Recreation Center which is gorgeous. On your way back to I-40 from Rugby you can swing through Pall Mall and visit the Alvin York State Historic Park. Alvin York was a WW1 hero, and his home is a neat place to visit.

Then go to downtown Jamestown which is quaint and, well, authetic and non touristy. The courthouse is cute and one of the few in the state that's all stone (not brick). There's also a little park in downtown Jamestown dedicated to Mark Twain whose family lived in Jamestown but moved to Missouri just before he was born. And just north of downtown Jamestown is York Institute, the local high school that was established by Alvin York with the money he made as a WW1 hero. He was real big on education since he wasn't educated himself, and he built a gorgeous facility which is finally being restored to its former grandeur.

While you're exploring the Cumberland Plateau, you might want to venture to Crossville. While I don't think Crossville itself is particularly interesting, Cumberland Mountain State Park is nice and has some fine examples of WPA craftsmanship from the 1930s. The restaurant there is also really good. And near there is the Homestead with an interesting museum from the same era when the government tried luring farmers to Cumberland County which, at the time, was destitute and riddled with poverty. During WW2 it was also a POW camp for German soldiers.

Thanks! We took our kids to see Pall Mall when they were young, but we've not been to Jamestown or Cumberland Mountain State Park. Because of my husbands job, we can stay in Hilton Brand Hotels cheap Could we stay in Crossville and see Rugby, Jamestown and Cumberland Mountain State Park?

Quilt Trail

or if you like festivals:
Dandridge Scots-Irish Festival
Townsend Heritage Festival and Old Timer's Day
Townsend would probably be my pick, but mostly because I love the book Christy by Catherine Marshall, and Townsend is the area where the events in the book took place.

Great suggestions--I've never heard of the Quilt Trail!
Thanks

Absolutely! It won't take you long to see Jamestown, and it probably won't take you too long to see Rugby. But it's a beautiful drive around there. Cumberland Mountain State Park is right outside of Crossville.

Have fun!

Have you been to Cade's Cove? If you haven't then it is a must see.

What about The Museum of Appalachia? It's quirky and packed with history. I love it. Welcome to the Museum of Appalachia
