I need help can someone point me in the direction of saving
a cocker spaniel.
We have a very very sad story. We bought our 6 yr old daughter
a chocolate cocker spaniel for birthday [nov] and the puppy
had heart problems. She died of heart failure and we are all so so so
broken hearted. my daughter is crying her self to sleep and
my son has been having bad dreams. I am beside myself with
grief. I am so scared about getting another puppy from a breeder
Any advice would be wonderful.
Thank you so much in advance

Sorry for your loss. You need to contact the breeder immediately when things like this happen. Cardiac issues are genetic and if they are having them in their lines they need to know ASAP so they can track down owners of the other puppies from that and any related litters. My guess however is you are dealing with a very unreputable breeder. So many people go buy the adorable little puppy from the neighbor 'breeder' and this is the result. Don't get me started there!!
I have two suggestions. If you are looking for a specific dog for the purposes of showing, you need to find your local breed club and ask for recommendations on a breeder. Then contact all of them. Ask them for all the information from their vets and vet hospitals that have done genetic testing on their breeding stock, as well as the results of all the tests. A good breeder will very willingly hand that over, in many cases even giving you copies of the genetic testing on puppies from previous litters. Then check AKC breed books for showing titles. A sign of a well bred dog is not only good genetic testing, but correct conformation to ensure the dog is sound structurally, therefor drastically reducing any chance of bringing home a puppy that will develop luxating patellas or such.
If you aren't willing to spend that kind of money on a healthy properly bred puppy, look for rescues. There are plenty of them in TN thanks to all those back yard breeders. I have a black male cocker now that I'd taken in as a foster dog. I was told he was 3.5 years old and had been chained to a tree with his brother since he was 6 weeks old. The owner was sent to prison for a good long while and the neighbor stepped in to try to find homes / rescues for the two of them.
I took him in as a rescue and intended to have his vetting all complete and teach him some house manners and then find his forever home. Turns out he's more like 7 or 8 years old, has luxating patellas in both back legs, tore both ACLs at some point and the previous owner had never had surgery done to correct it, has cataracts in both eyes and early stage glaucoma in the right eye. He's totally blind and lives on pain medications for his back legs. Needless to say, he's not going to be adopted and he's now my little buddy. However, I see tons of gorgeous healthy cockers in rescue all the time. Petfinder.com is a great way to find local rescues of whatever breed you are looking for.
Whichever route you go, good luck in your search!!
*** ETA - CDE - where are you? I noticed that you also posted in a thread on puppies for adoption in Texas that you're looking for a small puppy. Not sure if you realized what state the thread was for or maybe what state this thread is in? If you PM me I'll be happy to help you out.
