Am currently living in KS, near Kansas City. This entire area has been labeled "Tornador Alley". I have visited TN and find that I like it very much and have considered TN a possibility of where I would like to retire.

I was reading about Lawrenceburg, TN and from the information on CityData, it appears to be what I'm looking for: small community, beautiful scenery, affordable housing, etc. (I am not into night life, just want a comfortable, friendly place to live).

CityData says that Lawrenceburg's tornado activity is 122% greater than the overall U.S. average.

Can anyone from TN help me with tornado activity in TN?

And, if anyone lives in Lawrenceburg, and/or is familiar with the area, I'd love your input and opinions of living there....or if you think another area in TN is better, I'd love that advice as well.

Thanks!

Well, it looks like Kansas City is 135 percent greater than the rest of the US, so I guess you are slightly better off.

I wish I knew something about the area, but I don't. I think there was somebody on this forum awhile back that lived in that area and really liked it. I hope that helps.

Since you don't know anyone in Lawrenceburg or have any emotional ties to the area, have you considered looking at other parts of Tennessee? The eastern half of the state has much less tornadic activity. Essentially, the closer you get to the mountains, the fewer tornadoes.

Some smaller towns similar in size to Lawrenceburg but with fewer tornadoes:

Dandridge
Greeneville
Jefferson City
La Follette
Lenoir City
Newport

Several Middle TN counties have experienced more tornadoes per sq. mile than Lawrence County, but the county has the unfortunate distinction of being the only one in TN to be hit by an F5:

I live in Franklin county which is just 3 or 4 counties due east of Lawrence... maybe it's our proximity to the mtns, but we rarely have tornadoes materialize here. Unfortunately, Wayne county and Lawrence have the worst weather of all the counties along the southern tier of TN counties. That includes flash flooding, severe storms, and in the winter, more snow... it must be their location north of the Shoals of the Tennessee river... i don't know. But our weather is much more settled and we have plenty of room for newbies from Kansas

Here's all the info you need to put your tornado risk in perspective:

NCDC Storm Events-Select State

23 TORNADO(s) were reported in Lawrence County, Tennessee between 01/01/1950 and 03/31/2007.

10 TORNADO(s) were reported in Wyandotte County, Kansas between 01/01/1950 and 03/31/2007.

At the site you can find out magnitude of the tornadoes (more tornadoes in LC/TN but they were milder and less casualties: 65 hurt, none killed. In WC/KS, tornadoes were more severe: 47 hurt, 2 killed).

In LC/TN also, there were twice as many tornadoes, but 23 tornadoes in LC/TN caused half the property damage of the 10 in WC/KS.

In Lawrence County, you have one tornado at F4 or above. In Wyandotte County, you have four at F4 or above.

Just some different comparisons to help put it in perspective--
