A free program called USA Photo Maps allows you to download the topo map sections and aerial photos from terraserver and stitch them into huge topo maps. Being able to switch from topo to aerial photo and zoom in our out is a huge plus. Be aware though, that the aerial photos are often old, and the quad sections can be even older.
For a detailed map that you can hold, the Delorme state atlases and gazetteers are hard to beat. Another option is to check for a state sponsored map that shows hunting and fishing access. Fishing is big business for states. The Delorme Street Atlas CD with a GPS is a fantastic tool for those expeditions when you are exploring an area, but there is a significant learning curve when you first get it. We eliminated a lot of real estate listings using a combination of maps and aerial photos, and were able to screen a lot of areas with the help of the great city-data information, and to a lesser extent other internet sources like google maps and Moderator cut: link cut . One thing to remember is that no map is perfect. There are surprising errors in the geodesic maps, and sometimes there are old roads shown on maps that have been abandoned, and new ones that aren't shown. Even ponds and riverbeds change location and size over time. Last edited by mbmouse; 08-15-2007 at 06:38 PM. |

Thanks everyone for the great ideas. We'll be there in a couple of weeks to scout properties, your ideas are very helpful.
Does anyone know if the Tennessee Gazetteer names subdivisions on their maps? Thank you. |

Detailed enough to see the name of the road our new place is on, just about 4 miles south of Collinwood, TN. Not sure about subdivisions but if you want to PM me I will look to see how detailed your area of interest is! Happy to help out!

Itsme, Since you are already online, there is a wide variety of maps available to you that are quite detailed. Just type in the name of any town on the google.com main page and you can find maps from state to street level. There is Mapquest, Mapblast, and if you want detailed maps of topography that show back roads, elevations, waterways and the like, then try Topozone.com If you have a printer then you are set.

Ideally what I'm looking for is a paper map set for eastern Tennessee that will clearly show cities/towns, lakes/rivers AND subdivisions, so far I haven't found that. OR a listing of subdivisions that I can easily transpose to the maps.
Thank you. |
