East Tennessee is practically a temporate rain forest. It rains all the time here. When the rain stops, the volunteer firfighters set the woods on fire. Several tornados showed up around my parents' house in november '03. Lots of shingles and siding was damaged, and a house just up the hill was destroyed. Those were the closest tornados to that house since they bought it about 25 years ago. Look at it this way: Hurricanes hit an entire area. If you stay put, you'll get hit. Tornados only hit a house here and there. Your odds of getting up close and personal with one are very slim.

Faith, I don't blame you for wanting to get out of florida...It seems like you guys have really taken a beating here lately.
I see you are worried about the prospect of tornadoes up here. We do get our share of severe weather, but I was born and raised in the sequatchie valley. The sequatchie valley is a unique geographical area in that it is a rift valley. It is approximately 75 miles long and about 5 miles wide at best. I think most people here feel the narrow valley shields us from tornadoes. In my 40 years, I don't recall any actual tornadoes in the valley. We do get the straight line winds and they do cause damage..But..I've never seen any home completely destroyed by wind here. I guess to sum it up..our town-Pikeville is about 730 ft above sea level...I would argue with anyone that you won't find a more beautiful place on earth. Email me and I'll send you some pics if you want. Mr Kerry Thomas kklynnt@bledsoe.net |

Faith - take Kerry up on his offer. E-mail him. He has been an absolute God-send for my husband and I. We are leaving Florida too as soon as we can. We found the area he was talking about and it seems so perfect. He is just an absolute wealth of info on the area. I've done tons of research on the internet and the pictures from the eastern area are spectacular. We might be making an offer on a piece of property there this week!

I lived int middle tennessee for 20 years and never lost any sleep or worried about tornados. One hit a tree on my dads property and didn't disturb the tree next to it. Don't sweat the tornados! Much easer than hurricanes!

I live in East TN (Tri-Cities area) and I have lived here for almost 10 years now, myself from Fl and I have yet to worry about a tornado. The mountains protect us here. [moderator CUT] I haven't come across one yet that wants to move back

I noticed you bought land on wheeler mountain...guess what that makes us neighbors. I live just behind the Mary V. Wheeler School. Drop by sometime and we'll visit.
Welcome to the neighborhood. Kerry |
