Question Moving to TN or NC....need info please

I am looking into the eastern TN area since I love the mountains. I want to live in a small to medium-sized town that has a river nearby since I love to fish and be on the water. Other things I am looking for: New Age type towns so there will be massage therapists, reiki practicioners, hypnotherapy, New Age churches, "natural" grocery stores with organic products, adult education schools to pursue interests, gyms, a decent (younger) singles population, an area with a sense of community..where they welcome outsiders, clubs to join (like photography, etc.), affordable housing (like a 3/2 for 70k or less), maybe even a Main Street where you can walk almost everywhre in town to do your errands.......I am also wondering if TN has a state tax. I know NC does. Any info. would be appreciated! Thanks!

In my opinion, it sounds like Asheville NC has everything you are looking for excpet the state tax.

You are describing Asheville, NC and Boone, NC. They would fit you perfectly. But, yes, I think there is a state income there. But if you find a perfect match, it's worth it. Good luck to you!

Deja Vu . . . that description has Asheville written all over it.

As for a state tax in Tenn, they don't tax income, pensions, or IRA distributions. They will tax dividends and interest over a certain amount.

Smile Suggestions besides Asheville?

Asheville is too large for me. I like smaller towns where you can get to know other people and my road rage is kept in check!! Can you think of other places like I described in my first post?
Thanks!

How about Black Mountain, NC?

http://www.visitblackmountain.com/

It's 15 miles from Asheville. The population is between 7 and 8 thousand but the same mindset as Asheville is there, in my opinion. The town is a little older, too.

There is a winter pic of Lake Tomahawk on this City Data website and the Black Mountain main page of the City Data website has some more pics:
