I was greeted this morning with a story on Drudge about TN. Not exactly the best press...

Tenn. Nuclear Fuel Problems Kept Secret...

"KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A three-year veil of secrecy in the name of national security was used to keep the public in the dark about the handling of highly enriched uranium at a nuclear fuel processing plant - including a leak that could have caused a deadly, uncontrolled nuclear reaction."

As a Tennessee native and environmental scientist I have to say I'm not surprised. Hate that but it's true, there's a long history of heavy secrecy around all things nuclear in east Tennessee. Consider the bad old days in the '40s, '50s and early '60s when the federal facility at Oak Ridge was disposing of radioactive cesium in open ditches and mercury into a creek. Estimates are that over 350 tons of mercury were released into the environment in the '50s and '60s. Don't have the cesium figures handy, also a scary large number.

I looked up Erwin on the City Data pages to see where it is. From the photos it looks like a small pretty town.

http://www.city-data.com/city/Erwin-Tennessee.html

Also, on that page is a link to the Erwin problens story in the Knox News Sentinel but the story is from July 25. Wonder why the MyWay site is bringing it up now.

They may just be recycling the news like we recycle threads here on C-D from time to time.

I subscribe to Google News Alerts and often I wind up with old articles also for no apparent reason. Who knows!

There is a long list of Oak Ridge toxic problems. Talk to any of the old timers (that are still around) they will tell you what happened to the toxic stuff. You'll hear things like, "we dumped it in a ditch" or "poured it in the river". Crazy stories. There's also many Knoxville toxic concerns. The things that went on at the original Robertshaw, insane.

very unfortunate - here in murfreesboro the public outcry at local hearings stopped the landfill from taking in any more radioactive waste from CA ...unless people are aware how can they protect themselves?

I thought the CA nuclear waste went to Yucca Mountain? It's going to Murfreesboro? Crazy!
