I agree LauraC.
Also, I noticed a BIG difference in grocery prices from TN and CT. CT has no tax on food, but the shelf price, especially on produce is MUCH more in CT than in TN. No I did not see any difference in quality. My boys love macaroni and cheese. A box of Kraft Mac and Cheese in TN costs me $0.78 and in CT was $1.09. Now add the tax in TN, that box costs me $0.79 in TN, but still $1.09 in CT. (This was 2 summers ago and I know the price is now more even here, but that is when I noticed it and did the comparison)

Default I live in TN but my sister lives in CT

so I see the difference all the time. Virtually everything is more in CT. In addition, I find in CT that stores will carry only the national brand of something but not off-brands so you're forced to pay more because of the limited choice. The same applies to hardware and many other goods.

Well, if we're speaking of taxes, what is the cost to renew or register a car per year in TN?

The state needs to get it's money from somewhere. Here are the usual taxes:

State income tax
Property tax
Sales Tax
Auto registration
Tax on gas
Tax on tobacco and liquor

These seem to the the biggies, are sure there are a few more. You need to add all of these together to find your true tax burden. It seems the way TN has it's tax base setup, it does favor the higher income people.

$24.00 per year unless you want a special tag and the extra $26 will go to that charity or organization represented on the tag. But just a normal TN state tag and renewal is $24.00 a year. Well, that is in Washington county, all couties are different.

A friend in Fl says she pays $4.00 a gallon. So it is kind of a toss up. No state income tax, VERY low property taxes, low insurance policy rates, both homeowners and auto, more house for the money. Good news is gas went down yesterday, running between $2.45 and $2.58 a gallon (depends which station you go to) for unleaded. Correct me if I am wrong, but that is cheaper than Fl and lots of other states for gas...correct?
Gas in Altamonte Springs is $2.32 @ Mobil; 2.29 at Costco. Milk at Publix is 3.35 and sometimes at CVS 2.69

The minimum cost is $24 and that is what the state gets. Some places add a wheel tax, but goes to the county (in some places it is as high as $106).

As far as our system being "in favor" of high income people, I wouldn't really say that. People with higher incomes tend to spend more so they are paying more taxes. Also some investments are taxed (the Hall Income Tax), so even if those with higher incomes are investing their money they will probably fall into the category to pay on those.

Just thought to chime in here. Michigan gallon of milk is about 2.89 per gal and gas is about 2.35 right now.

My husband and I are thinking of moving south. Michigan economy is horrible. We are in the construction business. How is new residential construction going there in TN?

Blessings,
forgiven
