Hello everyone!! I am so glad to see there are others out there who fell in love with the Cookeville area!! My hubby and I currently live in So.Cal. but took a road trip in September to that neck of the woods, with the idea we wanted to look for retirement possibilities.. My Father-In-Law had his 90th Bday first week of Sept., so we decided to fly to Florida, stay with him for a few days, and then drive up to Georgia, to Knoxville (Great Smokey Mtn area), to Cookeville, Nashville (via Mt.Joliet),etc, Franklin (beautiful but expensive!!) and surrounding areas, Huntsville Ala., and then fly home from Memphis... It was quite a trip. Funny thing, after leaving Alabama, we had a couple of extra days before needing to be in Memphis, so we decided to backtrack to Cookeville and drive around (some more..,like we hadn't already put 1300 miles on the car!!) We wound up in Sparta, and actually bought some land close to the Caney Fork River and Rock Island. Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to explore those points of interest, but we definitely fell in love with the surrounding areas and the proximity to Cookeville, which we thought was darling.. We were just able to purchase less expensive land in the Sparta area, and we closed escrow Friday... Yes!! I never thought I would say this, but I am looking forward to leaving Sunny Southern California.. It makes me a little sad at the same time, since we have no family in Tennessee, but the land is calling us and we'll be pulling up stakes in the next 5 years. So.. in the meantime we'll be coming out regularly to check up on our dirt and try to keep up on the happenings. Thanks for posting your experiences and thoughts about that little jewel-spot of our great big beautiful country!! God Bless the USA!!

Welcome to Tennessee. I hope you like it here. It's not perfect or paradise, but most of us like it here. |

Hate to ruin a good session but I read the tornado rate is about 38% higher than the total U.S. norm. What do you say about that?

That depends on what part of Tennessee you are considering.. The closer you are to mountainous area, the less likely.
