Oops - never mind, redbeardslady ... I just read one of your previous posts and discovered that your land is in or near Sparta. We just moved to Cookeville and will be looking at land soon. I don't know how far out we want to live, but it sounds like we should consider that area.

Yes, I refer to it as Sparta, since that seems to be more visible on the map. But if you zoom in our property is right by Old Kentucky Hwy and Graham sparta tn - Google Maps

I also like that its near Rock Island State park and lots of beautiful water, including waterfalls and several marinas. I've attached some pictures, hopefully you'll be able to check out the area.

I had originally been looking online in the Tri-City area and read about Crossville / Cookeville on someone's posting. I have homes in Northwestern NC and Edgewater, FL. I was raised in FL but am so fed up with its evolution (the people, taxes, insurance, growth, etc.) that I'm considering moving up that way full time. I like NC, but they're going to tax my FL teaching pension. I love the friendliness of Southerners in smallish towns. My parents were born in the south. Sorry I got off track.
I was looking for a place in TN. I checked out Mountain City, but it's not close enough to any city except Boone--which I like. I can't live without a WalMart or Target and a Lowe's / Home Depot in town. I want the coolness of mountains, and one of the postings listed the 20 highest towns in TN. (Thanks to whoever posted that.) I started looking in the Cumberland Plateau area, and read all the raves about Crossville & Cookeville.
Cookeville sounds great but it's not quite high enough. Crossville is just short of 2000 ft. What are the pros and cons of each town? Remember that I like cool; I like temps in the 65-75 range, but I can stand a lot colder. I've only stayed in FL all these years because my family members are in Miami and Oviedo, but I've always hated the weather most of the year. In Miami, winter is the only decent season. In this area, it's cooler and nice from Nov. to April.
Is Cookeville on the Plateau or just Crossville? Any other towns nearby that are recommended? I bought a Prius so I can travel without feeling guilty; therefore, I don't mind living outside Crossville or Cookeville. Bones posted a description of traffic in one of the towns that made me laugh and reminded me of driving in Miami. I probably would feel right at home.

The picture I posted of the lot we bought is in Fairfield Glade, which is just North of Crossville. I seem to remember it's about 6 miles from I-40 to our lot and the elevation is higher, but I don't remember how much.

Depending on what type of social community you are looking for you will hear FFG described as a ghetto or heaven. If you're looking for retirement and plenty to do in retirement it is excellent. As a friend who lives there has told us "There's so much to do here that unless you say no, you'll never have any free time". Tons of clubs, travel, etc. The area is beautiful. I love green!

Yes, Cookeville is on the plateau, although Crossville's elevation is higher. Cookeville is known as the "hub of the Cumberland Plateau." Crossville's temperatures are generally 2-3 degrees cooler than Cookeville's.

Monterey might be a place to check out. It's in Putnam County (Cookeville) but is at the same elevation as Crossville. Often in the winter Monterey will get snow while Cookeville gets rain. Monterey is about 10 miles east of Cookeville and about 15 miles west of Crossville. The drive on I-40 between Cookeville and Monterey is absolutely beautiful, too.
