Grew up close, years ago you could go in camping, four-wheeling, horseback riding, etc. It was great my favorite vacation spot in the wilderness. You are still allowed to hike into Virgin falls (I have seen pictures and hear it is beautiful but can't physically handle the hike).

You can apply through temp. services work for a while and be hired on permanent. My husband presently works at a local plant that has sold. Looks like things will be picking up there. I don't come on this sight much you can stay in contact with me by e-mail. kdavis_erg@yahoo.com. But keep in mind if you are not ready to purchase a home or have no one to live with rentals are very hard to find in Sparta.

Sometimes the big city, high paying jobs make us forget who we are and what we need to be doing...
The biggest problem I see in Sparta is not many employment opportunities. This town was mainly factory work and some of them have pulled out and taken a lot of their work to China and Mexico in the past...... However Cookeville is close.
The Sparta hospital is small, good for somethings, however Cookeville hospital is not far and it is expanding. Also Crossville not to far away and it is growing also. Cookeville has some really great heart doctors!
Schools are fine here for the most you will find teachers really care! Giving special attention when possible. There is also a program called the "Grandparent program" my 76yr old mother is a part of that. She goes into a elementary school and help kids that need extra attention. All some need is the encouragement and attention. This is a lot of help to her making her feel usful at this age as well as to the kids. One 3rd grade girl went from poor grades to most improved in the school and A honor roll. The school system does care about your child and will do everything possible for them!
I would be glad to answer any questions you have on Sparta, if I don't know I will try to find out for you. Just e-mail me kdavis_erg@yahoo.com...........
Hope to meet you here soon.

Hi, Kathy - thanks so much for being an "ambassador" to Sparta! We were visiting the area recently with an eye towards purchasing some property. Of course we found an absolutely beautiful piece of land in Spara in Van Buren county, but before we get too far with it, I need to know if there's good phone and internet service available in the area. I do closed captioning for the hearing impaired, and I need that so I can work. Can you tell me what's available in the area?
Thanks so much!

There are jobs, but if you have a family, you will have to work two of them to support your family, as most think $7/hr is enough. Jobs that pay more usually practice nepotism for hiring. In other words, if you don't know someone you are unlikely to get in. You may have skills, but cousin Lisa with the legs and no experience, will be given the job and will talk on the phone constantly so everyone will get their service another day. So cozy up to the denizens and be sincere. Someone may like you and tell Cousins Tina and George to hire you. School bus driiving is usually available. If you know how to do maintenance on a home and will show up, you will soon be among the most popular workers around. It is an uncommon characteristic. So be nice and y'all come back now.

For those who live in Sparta. What would a person just moving there pay to have the utilities turned on? Is the deposit big? Ive been looking on line but can't find anything that tells me.

You might want to check with the White County Chamber of Commerce since I believe there are different utility companies for the city of Sparta vs. the rest of the county.

Good luck!

hi, we are in the process of building in sparta and yes, there are different utilities depending where you are looking. we are not in the town proper but rather 15 minutes east on route 70N. when we had the water turned on it was approximately $1,000 but we have a 400 foot driveway that they had to run the water pipe down. the electric did not cost too much, no deposit, but they did run a credit check on us and since we have excellent credit, they did not require a deposit. we are hooked up to VEC - volunteer electric company. hope this helps, we love sparta and are looking forward to moving there full time, right now our house is not finished on the inside so when we are there, we stay in our camper. I would imagine if you are moving into an existing home in town you would be able to call the utility company and ask for an estimate. Try doing a yellow pages search on electric and water companies in zipcode 38583-sparta. GOOD LUCK
