Cool, thank you again. I meant houses for sale, doesnt seem like anyone in those towns is going anywhere. Ive been looking at Realtor.com and nothing comes up Baxter and Algood. even though we wouldn't move for another year or so, lots of planning and decision-making! My fiance likes the country, mountains, the woods, he's a private person and we like our privacy. I think if you want to walk arounf your backyard naked, you should be able to, soooo, we are trying to find a nice quiet place to support these qualities. Again, my son is 6 1/2, so I have to consider him as well, more than myself even. Im fairly confident in the schools after what you've told me, and looking at them online. I like how there is shopping plazas and we're not giving any of that up so much. And we are dying for a Sonic. There are none up here, yet we are all continuously teased with tv ads for it.

What kind of housing are you looking for? There's a lot in Baxter and Algood. You'll find more acreage in the Baxter area and newer stuff in the Algood area. Maybe we can help you find something.
And I hear you about having privacy. I think it's very civilized to be able to pee outside in your own back yard while mowing the lawn.

yup! That's my Jeremy for ya! I dont know whether he pees more outside or in the actal bathroom! Yeah, acreage is good, as long is the home is not a fixerupper, we want at least 3 bedrooms and 1.5 bathrms. Jeremy is real picky with his kitchens since he is the cook in our house - Lucky Me!! Lots of counter space, islands are good, open concepts. As for me, i am not that picky, I want good size bedrooms, I would love walk-in closets!!
But I did not find any listings in those towns.

Do you have a price range? I did a quick search at realtor.com and found dozens of places in Baxter with 3 bedrooms and 1.5 baths.

You'll get better results doing a local MLS search for homes. That's how we found ours.
Try looking at realtor webpages to find MLS listings. Realtor.com is really generic and doesn't have nearly as many pictures. I think pamsellshomes.com has MLS access for Cookeville and surrounding areas. (Note: not promoting, just providing a resource. I do not know "Pam" and have not used her services. Just her page as a way to get to MLS listings)
Good luck with your search!

I was in the same situation a few months ago! We had about 3 days to buy a house when we moved here from MS. The listings on MLS really helped us narrow down our choices.

I think the Algood zip code is 38506. Sometimes they don't really indicate whether the house is Algood or Cookeville but will give a zip code. Not all 38506 homes are in Algood (I live in one that's inside the Cookeville city limits) but the 38506 post office is in Algood.
There are a LOT of homes for sale in Cookeville, particularly for autumn. This trend has been going on for a while now--probably at least 6 months. When we bought our home in August 2005 (we didn't close on it until the end of December 2005, though), it seemed like home sales were moving quite a bit more briskly. I would imagine the nationwide housing situation has impacted the Putnam County area to some degree, although probably not nearly to the extent Florida, California, etc., has been and will continue to be impacted.
On the school system--right now it definitely is still a (mostly) open school system but I think those days are coming to an end. There was recently a pretty big crisis with overcrowding at the Algood K-8 school and that is forcing the powers-that-be to recognize that they need to deal with the problem. Cookeville HS is also becoming a bit overcrowded, although right now it seems manageable. That will not be the case for too much longer if enrollment continues there at the pace it's been trending in the last several years. Obviously the solution is to zone the schools, and honestly, it really needs to happen sooner rather than later. It's a waste of taxpayer dollars to staff a school and then have it be half full, as is the case with Upperman High School if I'm not mistaken. I think it was Putnam School Board member Roger Williams who said something to the effect that "the problem is that we don't want to say no to anyone and it's gotten us in this mess." Zoning is what works for schools nationwide, and now that we are seeing the current problems erupting in Putnam County, it's the logical solution.
I have to say that I truly believe it's the genuine niceness of Tennesseans that has created the problem. As problems go, it's a relatively simple one to fix, albeit not painless for many.
