My husband and I are looking around for a safe, rural place to retire with 3+ acres or more. We love the outdoors...boating, ATV'ng etc. I spotted the town of Big Sandy and it looks as though the crime is low and property is affordable. Anyone have any experience with the area?

I don't really know it, I've just been through it a couple of times. I grew up in Clarksville and going to Kentucky Lake and Paris Landing State Park and the other areas around there was one of the things we did for fun.

Big Sandy is not very big. Camden is the nearest town of any population and it's not very big either. I would expect the crime rate to be low in the area, except possibly for someone trying to hide a meth lab in the hills and hollows.

There are some pretty areas around there. And it is a great place for outdoor activities. About the only really bad thing about living in that general area would probably be the available of medical care and shopping. You could probably meet your shopping needs in Paris, TN. I've not sure what medical facilities they've got in Paris, but for anything serious someone is probably taken to Clarksville; if very serious, they would be taken to Nashville. Of course, if you were planning on working that would be a consideration; that area can have high unemployment. Nearby Stewart County used to typically have two or three times the state average. I'm not sure about Benton County since a lot of folk there probably work for TVA.

You might also look at Dover and Paris. I've sometimes seen Paris listed as one of the top places to retire.

It's a very rural area. East of Paris and Jackson.

The crime rate is low, mainly due to a lack of people. It's popular on the weekends with canoers and outdoorsman, but there isn't a lot there. Camden has a lot of meth problems, as does the Paris/Henry County area. If I were older without children, Big Sandy would be a great place to get away from society. If I had children, I'd think twice.
