Nashville is the largest city in Tennessee, it's growing the fastest and has the most jobs. It's also a pretty diverse city. Memphis has the largest African American population, but Nashville has a larger variety of ethnic groups. Nashville has the country's largest Kurdish community, for example. Nashville also has arguably the largest gay population in the state (certainly the most gay clubs in the state).

Downtown Chattanooga is probably more kid-friendly than the other cities you mentioned, however. It's got a large children's museum downtown, a neat baseball park, lots of waterfront parks, an IMAX theater, and one of the largest aquariums in the country. Chattanooga is also hard to beat as far as beauty; its downtown is surrounded by mountains.

I hope that helps.

Actually, I thought Memphis was the largest city in TN -- did Nashville surpass it? Nevertheless, Memphis DID just get identified as the most violent city in the US.

Memphis is still the largest city in Tennessee. JMT probably meant to say that Nashville is the largest metropolitan area in Tennessee.

You're right, the city of Memphis is larger than the city of Nashville. But the Nashville metro area is larger than the Memphis metro area.

Memphis
670,902 (city)
1,274,704 (metro area)
592,350 employed (4.6% unemployed)

Nashville
552,120 (city)
1,455,097 (metro area)
764,560 employed (3.5% unemployed)
