Looking for advice. My daughter has been living in TN the last two years and attending college. She's graduated (Masters program) and has gotten a job out of state. The car she's been using is owned by my husband, registered and insured here in PA and we all want her to sell it right now in TN as she really can't keep in the city where she will be working. My husband has sent the title and the bill of sale to her. She's under the impression that she has to register it in TN to be able to sell it. Anyone know if that's true?

She won't have to register it here first. That would only be true if she wanted it to be titled in her name first. As it is, she is technically not the one selling it....your husband is (assuming the title is in his name). People buy and sell cars across state lines all the time.

good post with the caveat that PA is a notary state and 50 yrs behind the times. PA requires the signature on the title to be notarized at time of sale and there is a place for that notary stamp on the title. Hopefully the title holder got the notary stamp done before he mailed the title to TN. The notary stamp simply acknowledges that the seller is in fact the owner of the vehicle, is who he says he is, and the signature was done in the presence of the notary. Lived in PA before coming to TN, BTDT, good luck with the sale !!

Interesting point about the notary requirement. Since Tennessee doesn't require a title to be notarized...and the car is being sold in TN (apparently)...I wonder if the local County Clerk's office will care if the PA title is notarized or not? I don't recall encountering that specific situation....

might depend on the clerk. But when we brought 3 cars from Pa to TN we just surrendered our old titles (with No notary stamp) and exchanged them for TN titles.
The OP could have the PA title notarized down here, it just shows he is signing the title in front of a notary and the notary witnessed the fact. Or maybe the clerk wont care and let it slide. Bureaucrats can be funny depending on their mood.

I suspect your experience is typical Since TN doesn't require a notary, the Clerks aren't going to care what is called for on the title. They're only interested in abiding by the TN regulations - not what is required in another state.

Well Joe, some times I wonder if different agencies make up the rules as they go along. I restore old cars, here is a pic of a car I brought to TN when we moved here... but left titled in Pa. Sold it to a guy in Canada. I had to go to my local bank in TN and have her notarize my signature on the PA title (for free) so Canadian authorities would accept it. Sometimes you just gotta play the game.
