Sooooooo, if you decide to visit the South or you already live here, and you do some swimming in warm shallow water lakes, there's a brain eating amoeba, with your name on it, waiting to shoot up your nose.

It loves warm water hence the Southern connection. There have already been 6 cases this year in Texas, Arizona and Florida after 23 cases in 9 years. It's fatal within 2 weeks.

Like we don't have enough to worry about.

Here's the Associated Press news story:

My Way News - 6 Die From Brain-Eating Amoeba in Lakes

In another reason to rethink Forida, in central Florida, authorities started an amoeba phone hot line to advise people to avoid warm, standing water and areas with algae blooms. Where is there no warm standing water in Florida except for the ocean?

So, where was that Tennessee swimmin' hole, again? Bathtub is looking good.

Scary. The algae is just waiting for people....I heard that the Holston River/fishing isn't really safe because of the Eastman chemical plant. Haven't been in any lakes since we moved here, luckily.

Default Yes,Fla

L.C. You are sort of correct. I thought early news report had everything in Az, but only one case, yes underwater swimming.
. Guess 3 this year are Fla. We use to live in Melbourne, where they had event a few years ago at county park, maybe Wickham pk, had two 6' beach ponds, life guards. One kid did have this attack, and small signs were installed or swimming stoped. Also cuts or open wound on skin.?
.. Yes this summer did get some records at 104 degrees and news has many Ga / ALA lakes almost dried up so that shallow water must have been warm enough.

What this world needs is a fat eating amoeba.

I can see the infommercial now . . . "Lose thirty pounds in thirty days with the amazing AmoebaSlim!"

That's a joke, of course, but I know a girl who is a professional jockey. According to her, it's not unusual for jockeys to intentional eat a tape worm in order to keep their weight down. If someone is in that business it's fairly easy to get a tape worm egg. Talk about a career I don't want (well, not that I'm qualified anyway . . . ever see a 6'-4" jockey?).

What a picture! You dragging your feet while riding a Clydesdale trying to escape the ever-closer fat eating amoeba!

I heard about this on the radio and thought it was a joke. But holy cow it's true. Thank goodness my favorite swimming holes are the icy cold, swift waters at Fall Creek Falls or at Slippery Rock in the NC Smokies. I bet there aren't too many brain eating amoebae in rushing mountain streams. heh heh
