NASHVILLE, Tenn.- On July 1st several new state laws went into effect, including one that requires new welfare applicants to go through a screening process.
The newest welfare law, which passed the Senate 24-9 and 73-17 in the House, requires new welfare applicants to go through a screening process and any new applicant suspected of drug use will be drug tested before benefits can be received.

At lot of bills were passed last session to fix problems that don't exist.
i.e. we now have legislation that men must wear belts.

I still consider it a good law. I had to submit to a drug test before I was hired where I WORK, and we have random tests each month (I've had to suck on the q-tip 3 times in 5 years). I'm sure this testing procedure costs FAR more than it has saved in salaries because to the best of my knowledge no one has ever tested positive on the random tests.
When you look at salaries, benefits, and equipment, police robbery units cost FAR more than they save in returned stolen property. Using the logic of the ACLU in this case, we should shut down all robbery units to save money.
Just so you don't think I'm some super-conservative throw-all-druggies-under-the-jail type, you should know that I think the so-called "war on drugs" is a waste of time, money, and lives. To me this so-called war is no different than that failed experiment known as prohibition. Marijuana should be just as legal as tobacco and alcohol. It, along with other recreational drugs, should be regulated and taxed; not outlawed. I still wouldn't use them, but if someone else wants to use in a safe environment (not at work, not operating machinery, not caring for children , etc.), that's their choice.
But just because I don't think they should be illegal doesn't mean that I'm willing (as a taxpayer) to subsidize you using them. If a welfare recipient tests positive then by default that means they've spent their money on drugs and used MY money to buy food. If you have enough money to buy recreational drugs (and I'm including tobacco and alcohol in this), but don't have enough money to buy food for your kids, then you don't deserve kids.

Fortunately for the rest of us, you are not our moral compass

Unfortunately, we don't get to say (as a tax payer) what we are subsidizing. I really don't want to subsidize illegal aliens getting non-emergency medical care, but I am, and so are you.
The distinction between YOU and a welfare receipient is that you are an EMPLOYEE and they are not. As an employee, your employer can require a drug test. The government can not require a welfare receipient to take a drug test anymore than your government can require you to take one.
This law will be struck down just like in the other states that have tried it, or the state may simply withdraw it before a court challenge, since it has been shown time after time that these laws are not cost effective, because so few welfare receipients use drugs.
These types of laws pander to a certain element in society, but do nothing except cost tax dollars.
I think you are leaping to the conclusion that if a person on welfare tests positive than they used "your" money to buy drugs. They could have done an odd job or day work and made a few dollars. They could have been to a party where drugs were shared with them. They may have grown it, or helped with a grow. You don't know, you are assuming.
They may not "deserve" kids, and if they are on welfare we might like to limit the number they have, but that's not your call or mine. Our government doesn't seem to think too much of forced birth control, with good reason, because once you go down that road, where does it end? China has forced birth control.
No, using logic would not require the robbery units to cease function because they are not cost effective. Robbey, is an act of intimidation and implied, if not real, violence. Government has a responsibility to maintain order and protect citizens.
That is not the same, or comparable to spending thousands of dollars to find a few persons in their welfare subsidized home, using marijuana, or alcohol, or some other drug, sugary drinks, or cheese burgers or whatever else you don't like.
So in conclusion you don't think the Drug War, which has criminalized drug use, is effective, but you want the few people on welfare that use drugs to be punished criminally, even if, like the Drug War, it costs more of YOUR tax dollars than would be cost effective, and you'd be for preventing them from having kids if you could too.
I'm not seeing the logic in your position.

So with those dollars they can go buy food and not drugs.
The "Welfare Queen" is long gone but not the myth. I was in a position, last January, where I was in dire straits for my child and myself due to no fault of my own. I applied for food stamps and got them. I am forever grateful for that. A month later I got a job. Fantastic. That's what these programs are for!
However...
I also qualified for welfare. Do you know what I would have received? $136 a month. And for that I had to volunteer. I'm almost certain it was 40 hours a week but no matter, it wasn't worth it and I turned it down. It was far more important that I find a job and quickly as that was always my intention. I just needed a quick stop gap to feed my child.
I asked the very nice state worker who would take this kind of money, how would they benefit? She said that women with very young children take it because once they get a job they qualify for subsidized day care.
So if you see a woman on so-called welfare driving an Escalade and rocking an iPhone I would bet my bottom dollar that she is also going out with the very successful dope dealer. But no one is getting rich on welfare anymore.
And that's fine.
Personally, if you can make enough money to buy drugs you can buy your own darn food. Period. The "you choose to work they don't choose to get food stamps" argument is crap. They choose it.

It all goes back to the mindset that welfare is a fundamental right for those who are not working instead of a benefit that others in the state have made the decision through their representatives to subsidize.
As a benefit, they should be made to go through any hoops that the majority of the state's residents believe is needed.
I also do not believe in the war on drugs and believe that drugs should be regulated instead of outlawed- but the majority of the state's residents do not agree. Therefore, it is illegal. That is how this political system works- the same goes with welfare which is not a constitutional right and therefore can be regulated at will (or eliminated) by our representatives if the population supports it- which they do.

I am not for the legalization of marijuana or any other drug. Period. Pot is a slippery slope and anyone that says it is not addicting should try to take it away from a hard-core user. It's like wrestling a pipe away from a crackhead. Neither is advisable.

And reasonable people will disagree with the drug war- lets not let that disract from the much more important issue which is the entitlement mindset of those who are not contributing to society economically thinking that welfare should be a right instead of a privilege
