To clarify...
I don't actually work for Kroger's. I don't know if they are a great employer. I just like their stores. Actually I like it better than Publix. I find Ingle's to be much like Publix. Publix is a little better, though.
Yes, I worked for Publix to pick up some extra money when my daughter was small. Terrible pay, terrible benefits. They tell people that they will work 40 hours and then cut their hours without any notice. They are building on every corner in Florida.
It's like saying Walmart is a great place to work. Just weird.
In fact, Publix and Walmart have both had issues with promoting women.

This is true. Publix is good, especially if you want regularity in the pricing, but they are usually a little higher than the other stores, such as Albertsons, Kash 'n Karry, Winn-Dixie, etc. So, for those things which quality differs, such as the bakery and deli, Publix is better. But for name brand items that are the same everywhere, you might as well go with the cheaper stores.
I went to a Food City in Knoxville and, honestly, I didn't like it very much. It just didn't seem as up-to-date and helpful as the other stores. I didn't actually go into any of the Krogers, but they looked to be a lot better than Food City. I did, however, like the shopping cart to conveyor belt system, so that you don't have to unload your groceries yourself.

Oddly enough, in Fort Myers, FL (I don't know about anywhere else) Publix had cheaper shelf prices than Albertson's and Winn-Dixie.
I absolutely hated Winn-Dixie.
I definitely like the markets here. Sometimes you can get a good deal on steaks at Food City and they have always been decent quality. However, I hate everything else about the store.
Love the quality of the seafood and meat at Kroger's. I can get a Maine lobster! And I love the 10 cents off at the pump!

Publix in TN
I believe Publix has been in TN now for almost 3 yrs. You can go on Pulbix.com and find out more. Yeah Publix I work for them here in Florida, and we are hoping to move to Spring Hill. I'm a little afraid of the weather, but its got to be better than Ohio that's where we grew up!
Hope to see you all at Publix in Tennessee

Publix is coming to TN
The other stores you are looking for are in the CHA area now, and Publix is coming soon-- I have it on a good source (Food Lion) that publix has already bought a building on East Brainerd Road to open their first store!!!!

I wanted to confirm AAjetjewel's statement...
Yes, Chattanooga is getting 2 Publix stores here by 2008. The first store will be in the old Winn-Dixie on East Brainerd near Hurricane Creek estates. This specific store will open Summer 2007. The next store will be situated in a new shopping center on Hixson Pike. The anticipated opening for this complex is 2008.
Chattanooga's grocery store scene is lackluster at best for a town this size. We have Bi-Lo and Food Lion - both of which are mediocre (Food Lion is awful). There is an organic grocery store called "Green Life" but its tiny. There is one Fresh Market in the Hamilton Place area. By the way, Bi-Lo will build an all new store next to the planned Publix on East Brainerd (signs are already up for this new store). In addition, Bi-Lo has plans to open a "new concept" store on Hixson Pike in the next several years with "open air" shopping. Of course, this will be situated next to the new Publix shooping center.

Thank you for supporting publix!
Hi there
First off, I would like to thank you guys for supporting publix, and the overall positive comments. It makes my job worth while, and I feel blessed to make a difference each and every single day in customers lives.
Yes, I do work for Publix, and find it very rewarding. They have a complete new system on how they pay wages/ salaries, and now evaluate employees by performance.
No, they have absolutely NO qualms of promoting women at ALL!!!! I just passed my test, and I am on the finalist list for asst. meat manager!!!!(I am a female)
Time changes things......
Benefits are great at publix. Besides the stock options (some people titerally retired multi millionars!!!), we have BC/BS, 401 k, vision, dental, short and long term dissability, work. comp, tuition re-embursement and tons of other things. So, why aren't the benefits good, as one stated on this post? I think the benefits are excellent!
Just remember, we at publix do things very calculated, and at a slower rate, then some other retailers. With reason. Every employee is also somewhat an owner of the company due to stock holdings. They will not gamble our future, money, and investment away. So, easy, slow and steady does it. We are not done expanding.... not even close.
Right now we are closer to Nashville area with most stores, but, TN is a big state. And, it's NOT said, we are not coming towards Knoxville!
Besides, even on our website, new and upcoming openings are not right away posted. (We don't like to get the "cat out of the bag" to soon...lol)
All in all, I really do appreciate the support...
And, I am not sure if this is something to bring up...But, do you know that Publix does so much more then just offerings premiar service?
We support so many charitable organizations like united way, special olympics, habitat for humanity.....etc.etc.etc.
We, the employees raise money, through paycheck donations, giving our time to help raise money, etc.
Every thanksgiving and christmas holiday, we have a toy drive for children, we have food drives, we pick families in need to give holiday dinners too...and the list goes on and on and on.
I am not sure what other retailers have to offer??????

I absolutely LOVE Publix!!! My grandfather (my mom's mother) supplied all the marble (yes, MARBLE) for the original Publix stores around Lakeland and Tampa, way back in the 1930s until he retired in 1960. So we were always very loyal Publix shoppers. You don't go to Publix for a bargain, but you definitely go there for quality and for a simply enjoyable shopping experience. I know that sounds silly to some people, but it really is true.
When I lived in Atlanta, I used to go to my neighborhood Publix (in Vinings) to eat. The cafe there was outstanding, and to this day I have yet to have a better roast beef sub than I used to get at Publix.
I sure do wish Publix would come to Knoxville! When Bi-Lo announced they were leaving town, I was hoping that Publix would buy their stores. Alas, Food City took them over. sigh
