A new Publix opened just this month in Lebanon. It really is great. There are so many people there aren't enough shopping carts.

Horrible produce in our publix in FL
I mean really bad. The other day I had to give packages of fruit to the deli manager and there were two that were moldy.
I bought a beef salami home, shame on me for not checking the date, it was expired. We opened it, looked at it, smelled it, looked at the package date and threw it away. I could have returned it to the store but I didnt bother.
The produce there is very inferior.
I am looking forward to home grown fruits and veggies in farmers markets and co-ops.

One for Publix!
It must be a territorial issue with various grocery stores.
Here in Gainesville, GA you can get the freshest produce, the best, and generally best priced, cuts of meat, and super service from Publix. Ingles (the 3 I have been in) are not very clean, never well-staffed, and often have expired foods.
Kroger is Kroger everywhere. Some are terrific - others are... But, they always have everything and anything you might need. Not to bring this up again, but they are almost like, dare I say it - Meijers!!! Just no clothes, furniture, pets, spare auto parts, ferris wheels, etc.

Publix just opened at Hamilton Place in TN.....
My neices husband used to work at publix in Orlando and his friend moved here to manage this store. So, I know where I'm going tomorrow. I'm living in Rising Fawn and can't wait to walk into a spanking new Publix and to call it mine.

The thing about Publix is that their store brand stuff is often just as good (sometimes better) than the brand name stuff. Publix ice cream is GREAT.
When we lived in Florida, my inlaws (from Knoxville) came to visit. My mother-in-law is a culinary genius, a naturally brilliant cook--she gets mad when I say that, but it's just true. We went to Publix and she was so impressed. She said it was the nicest grocery store she'd ever seen. She just loved it. I figured that was good enough for me.
It's not a discount store, but if you shop the sales and go with store brands, it's not really going to be more expensive overall than following the same strategy at Kroger. I have found Kroger to be pretty comparable to Publix here in Middle TN. Maybe not quite as nice, but definitely a nice grocery store. Unfortunately, it is usually pretty crowded so I have been moseying down the road to the Cookeville Food Lion instead. I have an anti-Food Lion bias in general, so that was big for me. I have found that I really sort of prefer the Cookeville Food Lion to Kroger, though. They have a type of taco shell that no one else carries (and it is the only kind my teenager will eat) and their produce is pretty darn nice. We have been buying up Honey Crisp apples at an alarming rate. One time the produce manager was out and about and he noticed us oohing over the Honey Crisps. We had a nice chat about how good they are, and he gave us two "Cameo" apples to try, saying they were almost as good as the Honey Crisps. Now that was nice, huh? (They were really good, too!)
If Publix came to Cookeville, I'd shop there. Not all the time. But I definitely would shop there. I like the little salt and pepper shakers that come to life in their commercials. We have the pilgrims and the santas, and I bought extras to give to my children when they grow up and start their own households. So cute. They come out with new stuff every year to add to that little collection, or they did.

Chain stores have "store locator" links on their websites.
I never heard of Publix until this forum but at the very bottom of their home page is a "store locator" link. Click on it and then just select Tennessee from the drop down menu (don't type in any city or zip code or select any special feature of the store), and you will get a list of all of the Publix stores in the state of Tennessee with their address and phone number and a link for a map and driving directions to each store.
There are 21 Publix stores in Tennessee.

There is a rumor that Publix will soon be coming to Chattanooga. I haven't seen any written evidence of it yet but my sister-in-law (who lives in Chattanooga) says that she keeps hearing about it.
My husband and I split our shopping between Publix and Kroger. Some things Publix is better on and somethings Kroger is better on. Publix does have good house brands. Their real butter, yogurt, frozen yogurt and ice cream are real stand outs.
We do our shopping at Publix on Wednesdays. My husband has reached the senior citizen age and Publix gives a 5% discount every Wednesday.
Of course, we go to Kroger for first Wednesday of the month where my husband gets a 10% discount.
