Doogie, there are currently no member school districts or individual leagues in Tennessee that belong to the Academic Games Organization.
The only states in the Southeast that participate are Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina and West Virginia. Pennsylvania and Michigan also participate with chapters, but that is it for the Eastern US.
It is a fantastic group to be affiliated with, especially for a child with some special academic interests or talents. It can inspire youngsters to study a subject far beyond what he would glean in the school system. He/she does not have to meet any academic requirements other than having an interest in linguistics, math, science, history and/or geography. The kids study material in their area of interests, maybe all areas of study, and can work with a tutorer or a group. It is particularly beneficial for students to have a small group involved because they are learning and studying the required material, but the interchange of ideas between students is many times the most rewarding experience.
It is a wonderful way to challenge young people's minds and peek their interest in academic areas that may one day become their life's avocation. If your area (TN in this case) does not have any chapters, you can petition and sponsor to have one started. If several parents and teachers work together to form a chapter through the national organization it would be a wonderful challenge to present your young teens.
Once my hubby and I get relocated I would be very happy to work with anyone who would like to try to get a chapter going!
Below is the website for the national Academic Games Organization for lots of information and contact people. Keep me informed of any interest, please.
