Why would you need to have a carry permit if you're taking weapons from the house to the pickup rack?
They'd be openly displayed.

No permit is required to take the weapons "from the house to the pickup rack" because you'd still be on your own property. Well, unless you live in an apartment or park on the street... even then it's still legal as long as they are not loaded.

If the weapon is loaded, or unloaded but the ammo and weapon are easily accessible, then that is considered possession with the intent to go armed. Technically, if a rifle is on a pickup gun rack and the ammo is on the seat beside you, TN officially considered the gun to be the same as loaded. You'd have to lock the ammo in the glove box, or lock the weapons in the trunk.

In TN, you are not allowed to be in possession with the intent to go armed unless you:
- Are on your own private property.
- Are on someone else's private property with the owner's permission.
- Are at a location designated for firearm use such as a shooting range.
- Are hunting with a valid hunting license in a valid location for hunting.
- Have a valid Handgun Carry Permit (HCP) which also allows you to carry a loaded long gun.

"Openly displayed" doesn't matter. TN doesn't differentiate between open carry and concealed carry, which is why it's called a Handgun Carry Permit instead of a Concealed Carry Permit.

So unless you have a HCP, your weapons must be unloaded and secured at all times while you are in public.

I don't know of anyone who keeps a loaded lever action rifle in a back window rack.
