Someone on the city vs. city page put up this helpful link, so I thought I would post the Tennessee statistics for those of you who are curious how they break down.

Obviously, cities tend to be far more diverse in their ethnic and racial populations than suburbs, and especially rural areas (though West Tennessee tends to have a higher black/white ratio in rural areas than the rest of the state)...but for those curious, especially those considering moving here, this might give you a better look at the makeup of the general area, rather than strictly a city or county breakdown.

Metros will be listed according to overall size. These statistics are from the 2010 Census, so there have been some changes in total population, but probably only a slight change in the percentages.

In 2012, I can't figure out why this matters.
Sorry.

That's a debate for another time.

The only reason I put this here is a resource for those curious, especially the ones who are moving here that have a lot of questions about an area's demographics.

Sorry.
Not surprising, since East Tn is mostly white.

You should visit the Nashville forum if you wonder why it matters.

I've lived in other parts of the country besides Knoxville.

I've wandered through the Nashville forum over the years but don't go there on a regular basis. I've been a member of CD for a long time, though, well before Nashville had its own forum and never read anything regarding this issue. So I don't understand what you mean. Why does it matter?

There are several active threads right now in the Nashville forum that have something to do with this topic:

Is there a significant Hispanic community in Nashville?

Nashville's ethnic diversity.

Moving to the Nashville area with a diverse family

Similar threads exist in a multitude of other city-data forums where Census statistics are discussed and dissected. Such discussions might be of very little interest to some people, and some might even find them offensive, but others do find them interesting or even necessary. The U.S. Census spends a small fortune tallying our nation's various racial and ethnic backgrounds, so it is not a taboo topic. As long as it's discussed civily and politely, there's no need to stifle such discussion.

Now, back to the topic of this thread...

Philosophically, I know it "shouldn't" matter. That would be nice.

But based on the number of race-related queries on the Nashville forum, it obviously matters a lot to many.

Especially in the past year Nashville has attracted the attention of tons of creatives and alternatives from all over the country, and they have been asking on the Nashville forum how diverse Nashville is. They mean, Will I be the only one of my color/ethnicity?

For comparison, here are the city breakdowns for those metro areas.

I also included the percentage of each racial/ethnic group that the city makes up of the entire metro area. There are a lot of numbers here and I don't have columns, so it might be a little confusing.

The first row represents the entire city and it's population, followed by the metro population in italics. The percentage represents the city population as a whole compared to the metropolitan population.

The next 5 rows are the individual racial and ethnic groups, followed by their raw population within the city, and the percentage of the overall city population that makes up. The next number (in italics) is the raw population of that group within the metro, followed by the percentage of the raw city population of the group as compared to the overall metro population of that group. To simplify that, I'm basically saying that in the last column, X% of the total population of this group lives within the boundaries of the city proper.

Also, if there were even distribution of the groups between city and metro, than the percentages in the right hand column should match the percentage at the top right (city pop as a % of metro pop).

Feel free to ask if you need more clarification.

**note, for Kingsport and Bristol, I combined the two for simplicity. They are not too dissimilar in their makeup. I did not include Bristol, VA (I know, that's kind of an omission -- but for one, this thread is about Tennessee, and two, that would have required even more work).

City - population - percentage of city - metro population - city percentage of metro population

Nashville - 601,222 - 1,589,934 - 37.8%
White non-Hispanic - 338,782 - 56.4% - 1,176,069 - 28.8%

That is interesting, Nashvols.

One of the things I like about Knoxville is our wide international diversity. Too bad that doesn't show up too well in these polls.

I suppose Kurds are considered Asian - is that why Nashville's number is relatively high?
