We have been to Fairfield Glade and enjoyed it. Although everyone was friendly, we hoped to find a place with a few more younger folks. Being a "senior", I'm getting tired of being around mostly "seniors" all the time. Also I think FFG is having some problems funding some of their projects which will cause the POA fees to continue to raise.
Let me know what you think of housing and prices in Hendersonville. We hope you find your piece of TN you can call home someday.

We left Sun a.m. No that wasn't me. We didn't spend any time in the lobby except to grab coffee and run. So far we like the Hendersonville/Gallatin area but haven't looked at housing and probably won't this trip. We grabbed some realtor magazines though. I know it will be more expensive because its closer to Nashville and close to a lake but we are continuing to check it out. Will let you know if we find out much more this trip.

Hi OP
The Tri-Cities are in the North East corner of the state, between NC and VA. If you take 40 east, go through Knoxville and then in Jefferson County 40 takes a 90 turn towards Asheville and Interstate 81 begins by veers to the left. Go about 50 miles on 81, and pick up Interstate 26. You can go left and go to Kingsport or go right to go to Johnson City or go straight for another 10 miles or so and go to Bristol TN/VA. There is a sub forum here for the Tri-Cites (Kingsport, Johnson City, Bristol) that you could check out and see what folks have to say about it first and see if that is maybe a place you are interested in visiting. Might be to far away for you though? Just threw it out there as you said you weren't to thrilled with Crossville/Cookeville.
Tri-Cities is a bit more hilly/mountainous than the plateau and is a bit different. Some areas are more urban/metro, some is more country. As for lakes, we have Boone Lake, Watuga Lake, Holston lake and a bit to the west Cherokee Lake and several rivers.

My daughter and I spent 2 weeks in TN this summer checking out the state. Now, I'm bringing my hubby back to find out what all the fuss is about. We will be in Cookeville Nov 28-Dec 3. Burgess Falls was gorgeous. My husband is self employed and I'm a teacher. We have 2 children ages 8 and 10. I really like the area out on Hilham Rd. I also liked Baxter and Algood. Our favorite memory is spinning round and round on the metal merry go round thingy that we used to have her in California when I was a kid. That was a hoot! We will definitely stop at the Chamber. I want to visit one if not a couple of schools. I guess I would contact the district office to find out about school boundary lines? Next year my daughter will be in 6th and son in 4th. I'm working on gathering my transcripts for my TN credential. As far as I've read California is a reciprocal state. Any other California transplants heading to beautiful middle TN. Any and all suggestions will be helpful.

Hey Angela,
I sure hope your husband enjoys Tennessee as much as you did! Do you remember what park you were in with the merry go round?
Right now, Putnam County has "soft zoning" meaning if your children ride the school bus, they must go to their neighborhood school. But if you provide your own transportation, you can take them to any school in the county. They're talking about doing away with that option, but I sure hope they let it stay. I'm sure they'll at least keep it at the high school level since all three high schools are completely different from each other.
Anyway, I'm sure you've already got the link to Cookeville's schools, but here it is again just in case you don't have it:
Putnam County Schools - The schools of Cookeville, Baxter, Monterey, and Algood, Tennessee
And I agree with you about Burgess Falls! It's definitely a perk to living in Cookeville; you can go from the middle of downtown to such a beautiful, such a large waterfall in just 15 minutes.
Oh, and since you've been on Hilham Road, do you remember driving over the Bangham Dips? It's a couple of very short, steep hills in the road right in front of the Bangham Community Center. It's like a roller coaster!

If CA is a reciprocal state, you should have no trouble getting your TN teaching certificate. My husband applied for a TN teaching certificate (he had one from FL) and they sent it back pretty fast. I think there was a $50 fee or something. It will only be a temporary one and then the school will work with you to make it permanent. I think my husband said they did all the work to that end, actually.

Hey Angela,
We are planning a move from Sonoma County, CA, to Cookeville next summer as well! My daughter will be in 6th grade next year also... We are planning a trip out in January - we want to see how wintery the winter really is. Being used to CA winters will make it an adjustment, but we want to get a taste. My husband was in Nashville in June and the biggest thing he noticed was the heat and humidity. That will also be an adjustment. I can't wait! Best of luck to you and your family!

Now THAT's my idea of HIP! LOL!!
I checked out that ad for the 40 acre farm, too - WOW! Now, all I need is $400k and it'll be mine....
Wonder if she'll take a check?
Lou and I are still planning on coming down end of Nov/beginning Dec - and I'm just loving these posts!
A friend of mine and myself went to a local craft show held outdoors this past Saturday. Tons of crafters, music by B.E. Taylor, and local cloggers groups. They were clogging/dancing to 'Rocky Top Tennessee'. And oooohhhh how I wished I were in Tennessee!!!
