My husband is considering taking a job in Jackson, TN. I homeschool our children, so school districts are not an issue for us. We would just like a safe area to live. I would love any current info on Jackson, and reassurance that it is not a mini-Memphis!?!

My sister lives north of town. Smaller communities outside of town have a better family environment.

Biggest issues in Jackson right now is meth addiction. Now you're homeschooling, which means your children will be slightly isolated from that, but the fact remains sooner or later they'll leave the house.

Jackson is a rural large town, with rural problems.

Personally I prefer the Nashville area, and middle Tennessee over west, and I come from west Tennessee

Jackson has more crime than usual for a city of its size. I would also recommend the north side. Medina is a small but growing community to the north which seemed to be a popular choice for families.

Jackson has very little "crime" even in the worst areas, Memphis is even mild despite what most people are led to believe... most all of the personal violence is contained to young thugs do'n each other inside there own boundries. I would not like to live in Jackson myself but the crime rate has nothing to do with that decision... just not a city dweller is all.
If you had to live there, the north side is a melting pot unless you are loaded...the south side is basically unchanged, simple and more country feel.

Actually, Jackson has a high crime rate, but its confined. I would recommend finding a place to live outside of Jackson itself. There has been a lot of growth north of Jackson toward Medina and Milan, which is only twenty miles away. Many people who work in Jackson commute from other smaller communities in all directions.

Yes there are a lot of people who work in Jackson and live in Medina and other smaller towns close by.North Jackson itself is not a bad area either.

When we were house shopping, having Jackson nearby was a plus, but we wouldn't have considered moving there - it's not country. It's just a town by northeast standards. Now that we are here, we see it's a large town or very small city relative to being here in W. TN. We are there at least twice a week, mostly for shopping but also to meet with friends for lunch.

I have recently begun looking for a house for a friend who'd want to be near a college/university since her husband is a professor and wants to work part-time after retirement. So I have gotten a little familiar with some of the neighborhoods. If I were looking to live in a town/city, I think Jackson would work. Most of the neighborhoods are nice and one thing we've noticed is that even in the lower-end of town, the neighborhoods are mostly clean - not trash-strewn or covered in graftti - not to say that there is no trashy block or grafitti, it just isn't prevalent.

Find a job and move there, try it out.
