Has anyone on Tenncare ever had it cover their child's orthodontist work such as braces? Anyone know what kind of ortho dental work Tenncare pays for?
Thanks

Hi Dawn ~ There is coverage for orthodontia for people under 20 1/2 years and if it is approved in advance. Here is some info that might be helpful: TennCare (http://74.125.113.132/search?q=cache:HnREM4DeMZMJ:www.state.tn.us/tenncare/forms/chapter13.pdf+does+TennCare+cover+orthodontia&hl=e n&ct=clnk&cd=5&gl=us&client=firefox-a - broken link) Read to page 2 # 6 on Dental Care.

When my kids had braces the orthodontist wouldn't even take insurance. We had to pay up front and file and be reimbursed ourselves. It was all cash and up front and other parents told me that their respective orthodontists were the same. Ill be anxious to hear other peoples experiences with this.

Good luck!

If it is medical nessacary meaning it is causing other health problems yes Tenncare will pay for the entire procedure. If it is considered 'cosmetic"meaning the only reason to get them is just to 'look better' no they will not. the kids regular dentisit will have to determine if it will cause other health problems down the road. Then they file it with Tenncare and if the dentist has deemed it a nessasary procedure then it will cover it. Dont even attempt to get it approved if the child is only needing them to look better! You will just be wasting your time.. I know, I have been there. My 19 year old needed them for health reasons and they pd for the whole thing on her but my 12 year old needs them to straighten and align her teeth but Tenncare deems this purely cosmetic..so no dice on her. Good luck!!

our daughter was fortunate enough to get her braces on at 12,we went for a few consultations with the orthodontist,he determined that she had a class 2 overbite, meaning that it was a medical reason for the orthodontal treatnent,so it was approved.she is doing great she is 13 and the state agreed to pay the full amount.great for us because we could not have been able to come up with the money out of our pockets.it took about 2 months to get a yes or no,if it was approved it would be 100 percent covered.

i have 6 missing teeth including my wisdome teeth...i got it from my mothers side of the family... its some sort of birth defect, im about to get xrays and molds made to send to tenncare to see if they aprove it, i wouldnt consider it completly nesasary because the main reason i want braces is because i cant stand the way they look and feel...and the ones on the front bottom cut and irritate my tounge because they are so small and kinda sharp, needless to say brces is the only way to fix this problem for me...do you think tenncare will cover it??
