Hey! My husband and I are interested in that area too. We have a 2 year old and a newborn so schools are an issue as well. My husband works in HVAC (heating ventalation and air conditioning), so we're looking for some kind of construction company or something. It's funny how many people want to move to east TN so bad. I guess thats a good thing!!

Hi Ya'll!
Hi, I see everyone on this thread are looking to move to East TN but haven't had many answers yet. What would you like to know? As far as schools that was mentioned, Sevierville Schools are supposed to be great. I do know they are VERY well funded as Ms. Dolly Parton fills in the gaps that the government funding misses. They do have one of the best reading scores although all east TN elementary schools, (maybe middle and west too, but not sure there) have some type of "reading counts" or "accelerated reading" programs. Which is a school wide, goal based program where the children's books are rated by points, the child reads the book, goes to the computer, takes a test about the book and if they pass, get the "points" for that book. If the goal is met for the semester, a later grade is added to there class grade. There is also a school wide competition for the program and the top 10 readers of the school are awarded prizes at the end of the year. This program, by added the aspect of combining reading, computers and competitive goals, has REALLY boosted the want to read in children. Which in my opinion, anything to get a child to enjoy reading is fantastic!
From others on this forum, my own experiences with my boys, and other parents in the area, in East TN the best school systems are : Oak Ridge, Sevierville, Washington County, Kingsport City and Maryville schools seem to be the top choices.
Unemployment rates are low, property taxes are low, traffic is nothing (except in Knoxville, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg) cost of living is low, friendliness is high, views are the best and there is lots to do all the time in East TN.
Anything else you want to know, just ask specific questions, there are lots of knowledgeable Tennesseans on this forum that are happy to answer questions about their area.
Hope this helps some!

I'm not from that area but I wish I was. I live in Houston and HATE it. We have been to Maggie Valley several times and we always go over to Cherokee. We really love that whole area. We want to move near the mountains. We have always thought we would move to N.C. but since I've been on here reading about the taxes, it looks like Tenn might better because of that. We at least want to be near the mountains.
Good luck to you!

mbmouse, 2 cities I am interested in are Oak Ridge and Maryville. Could you comment on the differences if any? I believe that my research has shown that both have good schools (although not an issue for me). Employment? That is a concern..retirement..in the next several years Thank you

I don't know to much about those two cities, but from what I have heard from others here and other locals and my opinions driving through them and stopping here and there through out the years I have been in TN (10 years)
Oak Ridge: High technology, new & clean. There are a lot of very highly educated people in Oak Ridge. There have been many scientists and such from Russia, Australia and Japan and there families have moved there for jobs. The schools are rated highest in the state and rank as some of the best on the country. It is nice for the fact that it is not in Knoxville and there is A LOT less traffic issues than Knox. but close enough to get to the big malls and such in Knoxville. There are some beautiful waterways in Oak Ridge as well. It seems to be more of an open, valley area, meaning you have lots of open views of the mountains.
Maryville: Great foothills of the mountains city. The schools are claimed to be very good in Maryville. It is close to south Knoxville and Alcoa is kinda a continuation of Maryville. I particularly don't like the way the roads are laid out and a bit to much traffic for me, but that is me, others may not mind it at all.
It is a convenient location to travel to other parts of East TN, such as Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg and you can do so with out going through Knoxville.
It is more of a "in the woods" feel, meaning there are less open views of the mountains, but it is closer to mountain activities such as hiking and rafting.
Maybe some others on the forum will have some better, more detailed information about each area. I know LauraC has been doing a lot of research on Oak Ridge and probably knows more about what is available in Oak Ridge than lots of people who live there!
