Default Questions to locals around Townsend

I am looking to move into the Townsend area sometime within the next 3-4 months or so, hopefully during the spring time. The town seems very nice and quaint and would seem like a great place to "get away from it all". My only concern is that there is not enough in the town for me, as I am moving from a large city and am used to that type of lifestly. So my main question to you is what draws you to the town and what do you think could possibly be added to the town (mainly what type of stores/services may be lacking or insufficient)? Thank You very much.

If you're moving from a big city, you have an enormous culture shock coming. From what I've heard about that area, there's some tourist activity but it's a very rural area. It's not too far from Maryville if I recall correctly...

In any case, I would take more than a few months figuring out where I wanted to live, if I were you--maybe if you absolutely have to move in 3 months, you'd want to rent with a short term lease because I have a feeling you might be missing a lot of big-city amenities in Townsend!

Use the "search" function on this forum and there's a wealth of information here for you. Then, after you're done with that, ask any remaining questions and people will be happy to help you.

And...good luck!

LauraC has advice somewhere on this forum about relocating. Basically she says, if you are from a city, stick with a city, if you are from a small town, stick with a small town, more or less.

It's some of the best advice I've ever read. Rarely does moving from one extreme to another work.

If you are used to a city lifestyle, and like that, then you will be in for a huge shock living in Townsend. There are about four main families that owned the land for a long, long time. Only in recent years has some of the land started to change hands. (there is a big, long story here) There are now pockets of exclusive type gated and non gated "neighborhoods". Many of these homes are secondary residences. If you are looking to start a business there are lots and lots of things that Townsend doesn't offer; but there is a reason for that. As far as what would be a success there; think seasonal. Good Luck.

The short version of the long story, as relayed to me by one of the Tiptons (one of the four families that are still a major force in Townsend), is that there were originally 4 men that had a pact that stood 3 or 4? generations to always keep the land in the respective families but one of the younger generation went outside the pact and didn't offer land to one of the other three families and sold to an outsider. Lots of hurt feelings, fighting, etc.

An interesting story is the development of Tuckaleechee Caverns in Townsend. As you can read there, when one sold out it was to the other. Neat place.

For me.... the area was a good fit. I currently share my residences in Florida and Tennessee. On a personal note... I would have choose a more rural area but Townsend offered the best of both worlds. Happy marriages thrive on compromise. .. so we have a home in Laurel Valley. The draw generally is the view and golf. My wifey is a shutterbug and loves Cades Cove, which is one of the top ten places in the US for photography. Maryville 20 miles away ( pronounced Mare-vul) has everything she needs for a shopping fix, and offeres a modern medical center. I have access to the Cherokee National Forest for hunting and some good trout fishing. Since I like to fish and hunt, and would be a bit considered a bit more "down home" , this area is a fit for my wife and I.

In addition... We both have strong Christians values so we needed an area that offered all I have mentioned as well as opportunities for spiritual growth.

Default outdoorsy types?

From what it seems, the area is a very quiet area and the main "past-times" include fishing, canoeing, tubing, and from what i've heard some "bluff-diving". But you did mention something about golf which intrigued me as I am quite the 'Links' Buff. Is there a lot of opportunity to go golfing and other outdoor activities (hunting, fishing, etc...) cuz that would make my transition a whole lot easier.

Attached is a link to local golf courses. Townsend, Tennessee Golf Courses
There's also tons of outdoor fun which includes the activities you mentioned plus tubing, horseback riding, hiking, trail walking, etc. No reason to get bored around here

Default Drinking in Townsend

What (if any) are the drinking rules and/or buying/selling alcohol rules in Townsend? I know Blount county is a "wet" county but there is at least one town within the area that is dry. So how is it in Townsend?
