The word is definitely getting out. And while I have a long ways to go before I can retire, at least I'm already living in the right state.

While most of Tennessee would make great retirement destinations, the state has a list of 14 communities that have met certain criteria to be listed with the state's official Retire Tennessee program:

West Tennessee
Hardin County
Henry County

Middle Tennessee
Cumberland County
Franklin County
Maury County
Putnam County
Robertson County
Warren County
White County

East Tennessee
Hamilton County
Jefferson County
Loudon County
Roane County
Sullivan County

In addition, the American Association of Retirement Communities has given its Seal of Approval to the following Tennessee communities as ideal retirement locations:
Chattanooga (Hamilton County)
Cookeville (Putnam County)
Crossville (Cumberland County)
Kingsport (Sullivan County)

Oddly enough, here is a list of the 10 WORST states to retire and one of them, Oregon, also has a high crime rate. I guess it depends on how you count "crime" - as in murders vs. car theft. Or is it corruption? Gangs?

Sure. Just let Arkansas or Mississippi annex Memphis. that should reduce the stats tremendously.

Along similar lines: TN is a great state for someone living in another state to retire to, based on COL differentials. But where do the people from TN retire to? Do I have to go to Mexico or Honduras to get the same COL differential?

^^yeah, I was going to say, I'm sure the incredibly high crime rate in Memphis skews the state's rate by quite a bit.
