That's only step one . . . now you have to pass the "I ain't afraid of no stinking cows" test:

And, the "Yes, we enjoy possum stew and wild ramps at least once a month." test.

Don't forget Maryville is Mar-a-ville and not Mar-e-ville. I got corrected several times while I was there.

To sound like a true native, pronounce it "murvul."

Do I have to be without teeth to pronounce it that way? The man who corrected me said it that way and didn't have any teeth. Just wondering if there was a lingual relationship.

I have to agree with Hiknapster. It's Murvul with an emphasis on Mur running together and the vul also runs together. It really is a Mrvl but one has to add the "u's" to be able to sound it out phonetically.

Now, when I go visit my Mom in Farragut I have to choose how I pronounce it depending on my audience. When I talk to out of towners I say "Fair a gut". When I talk to fellow Maryvillians I say "Furgut". That way everybody's happy.

Or just ignore the whole thing. For example, I refuse to pronounce Shelbyville the way the Shelbyville locals do. If any of them complain, my standard answer is "Oh, shut up".
