COOKEVILLE -- What ever happened to motorcycle cops?
Most small city forces do not have them these days, but Cookeville will soon have two patrolling city streets. It's an effort being undertaken for several good reasons, Police Chief Bob Terry said. "We are leasing two Harley Davidson motorcycles for a period of two years and will train and certify officers to use them, mostly for traffic situations," the chief said. Hey that is neat! We built and owned our own MSF (MOTORCYCLE SAFETY FOUNDATION) School here in our county and at that time our city had 3 Motorcycle Officers. Once in awhile they (only one at a time) would come on the early Sunday morning classes to stop and say hi for about 5 minutes. They would chat with the students, commend them for taking the class to be better riders, give some extra tips, etc - great way to build repuation to and from each other.
(as well as with our school) We now have 7 motorcycle officers - 2 want to become MSF RiderCoaches with us, even. They really add to our city. Very friendly and can be VERY FAST WHEN NEEDED!! (if ya know what I mean) ..................BUTTTTTTTTTTTTT....there is a big but, they can HIDE EASIER than a car for speeding areas! HA! But that is ok with me! ![]() |

I hope they are a viable part of the motorcycle community. It would be nice to see them ride their own bikes off duties. It would be nice to see them ride with a local R/C. In Cookeville there are several R/C's (1) Riders Of The Wind (2) GWRRA Goldwing (3) Southern Cruisers Riding Club, Chapter 130. They would be welcome, and could bridge the gap between the motorcycle community and law enforcement. If not, Please learn the biker wave!
