Hi everyone!

We're thinking of moving to East Tennessee. Actually, we're about 95% sure that's where we'll be, however we have to get things sold here so we can make the move.

I just have some questions regarding health care and such.

My parents will be coming with us. My dad is in his 70's and we're hoping he'll be able to retire. However, as many know, Medicare doesn't pay for much and he does have health issues.

Is there any kind of state medical assistance for seniors?

How are the doctors there?

Anything else we should consider?

Thanks in advance!

Hi from the religion board, kawgpz!

As for state medical assistance, I'll let someone else with more knowledge handle that. I know there is Tenncare but I have no idea what it is.

If you live in the Tri-Cities, you'll have excellent medical care. Johnson City has really grown its "Med-Tech" corridor in an attempt to provide its economy with an anchor. It's owned by Mountain States Health Alliance (msha.com) which is the big regional player.

Where are you thinking of settling down in east TN?

Not knowing if he served in the military try the following links
Memphis VA Medical Center - Facilities Locator & Directory

Disabled American Veterans (DAV) - Membership - Department & Chapter Links (broken link)

Forgot about the VAs. There is one in Johnson City, too.

Hi back at ya, Jab!

We're not 100% sure exactly where, however, something like Gray would be excellent. We own a carpet cleaning business and would like to be able to do the same thing there. We thought being between Kingsport and Johnson City would be ideal. However, our options are open right now.

He's not military, but thanks for the info.

I know California has Medical, and Arizona has AHCCCS (Access)...I just do not know if all states offer the same thing.

The state health care program is now called "Cover TN". You can find all kinds of info about it here: Cover Tennessee
Hope that helps.

Hi - Tennessee does not have a state sponsored supplement to Medicare. (You may have heard of TennCare but that is not applicable to those that are on Medicare; neither is the new CoverTN plan) There are various private supplemental plans out there. As far as services, that seems to vary from area to area or town to town. I hope this helps.

I really do appreciate the info!

I do hope we can make this work. We want out of the desert, but I'm afraid my dad won't go unless he knows he can get reasonable coverage.

He has some health issues right now that are most likely going to prevent him from working much longer, which in turn...he loses his insurance coverage. We just cannot stay in Arizona. We need a new start somewhere...a new life somewhere away from "casino life".

Thanks again for the info...I'll have to do some more checking I guess.

You might want to check out Southwestern Virginia or Northwestern NC. I'm not sure what their medical coverage is, but if it would work for your dad, cost of living, weather, etc. are very similar to NETN.
