Well since you asked:

A large part of what makes a place qualify as "desirable" for me is really what's not there: no big-name resorts, no fast-food chains, no giant mega stores, no outposts of those European luxury brands: basically, anything owned by a publicly traded company does not have any place.

A true home town is distinguished by a sense of place and soul, with mom-and-pop shops prospering, and the local "joints" owned by those people you see there; lots of breathing room; plenty of elbow room.

I do want to live in a location that I can feel safe. It should have a populace and government that value the Constitution; uphold true law and order and have a strong respect for the rights all individuals.Add to that a sustainable economy, with a government and citizenry that has moral values, and with limited local taxes,

Like I said realistic? Don't Know. What I do know is I have never before lived in a town of more than 5,000 people. When I started this search, where I live now was at 5,000 souls and I was feeling crowded! Now it is at 6500! and I just can't stand it! If it wasn't for my present health and being on the heart transplant list, I would have left long ago. It is just health care has become really important lately

As we get older our priorities can/do change.

Quality of your health is paramount and great health care is also part of this...

You sound like you're looking for mid sized cities in Alaska. ;-) (in Alaska, mid sized means... 5-10,000)

I loved Alaska while I was there, just couldn't deal with the months of darkness and weather. looking now for a more moderate climate as snow has gotten real difficult to deal with. Mainly focused on Tennessee because there is family in Crab Orchard and Chattanooga

You should look at some of the small towns in Western North Carolina. Many of them have good Main streets and plenty of local dining and shopping. Not sure about house and land prices, but I think you could find many of the things you want there as long as you are good with living in the mountains.
