I am traveling to Gatlinburg TN on January. I live in Miami Fl and I am renting a car. Trying to save myself a little money, I will rent a regular size car, lie a chevy Malibu (this is the type of car the rental place says that may have available) I need to buy or rent tire chains... since I still dont know what kind of car they will give me (last time I paid for a compact car and they gave me a pick up!) I can not buy the tire chains now. Where in TN (gatlinburg or pigeon forge) I can rent tire chains or buy them?
second: I will be saving at least $500. Please help me!!!!! |

I would double and triple check that info about chains on the tires. Reason being, and if I am not mistaken, chains are not allowed on any paved Rd in TN, dirt roads only is where chains are allowed.
Then again, this is not Alaska or even upstate NY. Tire chains are not normal here, even in the Smokeys. |

"It is permissible to use tire chains of reasonable proportions on any vehicle when required for safety because of snow, ice, or other condition tending to cause a vehicle to skid." Studded tires permitted Oct 1 to April 15 on vehicles less than 9,000 lbs GVW, buses, emergency vehicles. See Tennessee code, title 55 motor and other vehicles, chapter 8 operation of motor vehicles - rules of the road, chapter 9 equipment - lighting regulations, part 1 general provisions 55-9-102 emergency parts and accessories to be carried by various type motor vehicles. Refer to 55-9-106 studded tires. Note: Click on left yellow folder icon for "Tennessee Code" to view the titles. "

Well, I was going to answer that question, but I see that you already have.
In any event, I would wait and see what the weather is like at the time you're planning to come, and I'd insist on a front-wheel (or four-wheel) drive vehicle. Tire chains are a pain in the butt; even more so if you've never used them before (I have . . . they're a pain in the butt!). If you still want to buy them when you get here, then someplace like Sears Auto or a tire store would sell them (assuming it's not the first snow of the season and they haven't sold out). |

Yes I live in TN and been to Gatlinburg in winter weather.
Good clip above, what site is that from? I am not sure if tire chains rules differ from county to county or state wide. It would be nice to know. ![]() |
