I have lived in the Greenhill Area all my life, in fact I am within walking distance of Iron City. I was just wondering if anyone can tell me any information pertaining to the history of Iron City. I have personally toured some of the old Iron Ore Mines and rail beds and I am having trouble finding any really detailed history on the Area. Can anyone help me.

[I grew up in Iron City also and do go back to visit sometimes. Sledge was the last name and I had two sisters. Denise Janie and Rhonda. We lived in a big white house across from Alene and Gifford Hurst. I used to go back much more when my Uncle and Aunt were alive, but all my family are now gone from there. My older sister Denise passed away two years ago and she loved the place. Rhonda and I were just there on the 4th of July. Anyone else from Iron City? Janie QUOTE=krichter;599921]I just found this web site and I'm excited. I grew up in Iron City during the 60's and 70's. The town has lots of history. The oldest thing I remember is the old Drug Store where Mr. Bill Danely would serve us ice cream.[/quote]

Never worried about where I went there when I was young and still don't now that I am grown. Know the place like I know my childrens faces. I do hate to see the place so....hum... unlike when I was a kid there. Willis store, and all the town gone, houses, burned. My granny's house Cora "MAY" Littrell, and Aunt Bessie Green's that got hit when the tornado came thru, all gone. Uncle Lois, and Aunt Kathrine's still standing though. Aunt Dora's there also, just looks different. I remember, all the friends, family's, and wonderful place I grew up. Walking to school, playing in the creeks, swimming at Rocky Ford, My folks, JR Sledge and Dot, lived there when they were kids also. My Granny moved with us when we moved to Florence and always missed it. My parents are Burried in Loretto, so I vist some. I sure would like to hear from others, from Iron City! Janie Sledge

My family has been in and around iron city since the early 1800's.they sold milk and butter to local businesses and people there.they loved iron city and never said anything bad about the town or the people, one was 95,one 87,one 83 when they passed on and there are many more ,all had long and good lives in iron city.I will mention that one was a charter member of the masons, over fifty years a member.I am 60 years old and I still call iron city a little piece of heaven, been hanging out there since I was in diapers.Yes, Iron City does have a history,a grand old history with some grand old people.I would like to tell you about Iron city as it would be told by the old timers, not by some person or group seeking fame and fortune.Iron City, what a fitting name for a town with grit,a town tough as iron,a town which suffered great losses over decades and survived and is still there with children playing in her streets, bicycles streaming by,laughter and joy from the children of a peaceful town,Iron City,Tennessee. What about her past you say? Well lets just see.Built around iron ore mines which are no longer in use,had a iron smelting plant at the time, had an area called mining town which was housing for workers.had three railroad lines entering town, the west point line, the collinwood line and the L&N line plus a passenger train and a real train depot.had a hickory mill which made handles for tools, had a plainer mill which made hardwood flooring and a gris mill which made corn meal for baking some good old country cornbread. There is still a saw mill for lumber there and two casket factories. At one time there were two hotels, the smallwood hotel and the reynolds hotel, there was a drug store, danleys drug, and a barber shop. There were two doctors offices there,DR. Danley and DR.hardison. there was one restaurant with very good food. The town had three garages,Hogans garage,Forsythe garage and Holdens muffler and tire which is still there, had one bank,Iron City Bank. you wont believe this, there were five general merchandise stores in town,Roy Hensley store,Mr. House store,MR Willis store,MR.cannon store and JOTUM-DOWN store and service station, there is one post office and a volunteer fire station.Once there was a school house which went from first thru eight but it closed and moved to Loretto, Tenn. and there was a college,Southern Normal College, gone, all gone. The town has four churches,Baptist,Methodist,Church of Christ and Missionary Baptist and a masonic lodge, had a Eastern Star but they moved.Just thought you might like to know these little things about Iron City,Tennessee,so if you are looking for a good town with potential, look no further than Iron City,Tennessee, peaceful and quiet with lots of natural beauty and the mighty shoal creek running right through the middle.God Bless

I would love for someone to tell me if there are still any Brewer's in Iron City, Tennessee. I am trying to do a family history on the Brewer Family. They came to Louisiana from Arkansas and to Arkansas from Iron City, Tennessee. Also my great, great grandfather owned a store there. His name was "Ben Brewer" I do not know about his wife. Can anyone tell me any history?

I did mnot grow up in Iron City but have visited many times. Had a lot of relatives there. The Gallians, Linvilles, Murphy,s and others. My great grandmother is burried in the cedar grove church cementery. I would love to live there and plan to visit again during 2008. I have lost contact with most of my relatives. One of the relatives used to be the teacher at that old school.
