Wow. I've seen some of the clear cutting up there but had no idea just how bad it was. We are all so wrapped up in our every day lives that we've become blind to our world, the world we are ravaging and then will leave behind for our children & grandchildren.
I'm not a 'tree-hugger' but I do think we should all be more aware of what we are doing to the planet.

If the story is true, why were no pictures included? I'm not saying that it isn't but it would be more effective with pictures.

On the plateau, this translates to an annual holocaust of about fourteen million trees.

Holocaust?

hol·o·caust
–noun
1. a great or complete devastation or destruction, esp. by fire.
2. a sacrifice completely consumed by fire; burnt offering.
3. (usually initial capital letter) the systematic mass slaughter of European Jews in Nazi concentration camps during World War II (usually prec. by the).
4. any mass slaughter or reckless destruction of life.

Yeah, I'm not truly feeling the melodrama. I couldn't even get through the whole thing. My first eyebrow raise was when the author railed on about the horrifying practice of cutting down a zillion fab hardwood trees and <gasp> replacing them with inferior trees.

Rape. Holocaust. I dunno. Those are two loaded words.

Well, he's right about the advertisements with the newspaper being chucked without reading them.

The article was written in 2004 and reprinted so any photos were probably with the original story.

In reference to this subject, here's a conservation organization that uses volunteer pilots to show people the effects of sprawl, clear cutting, strip mining, etc.

Volunteer Pilots - Welcome to SouthWings.org: A non-profit organization based in Asheville, N.C. Conservation through aviation.

I wrote an article about them in school, but don't know where it is.

Here's some photos from one of their flights. Pretty shocking:

I agree (loaded words).....they should not equate human lives with trees. This is an insult to survivors of the holocaust and their families.
