If my car broke down, what would I do in a rural setting
|
Seriously, Ive been broke down several times (no cell phone) its not long before someone will stop and help you. Either fix your car, give you a ride or call a tow truck.

I think the phone lines have to be a certain capability for dsl. Hell, we just got that capability and we're in a "fairly rural" area of NJ. Until then we used cable, and now they've upgraded our phone lines and now we have the choice of dsl & fiber optic..

Thats something I need to look into if I decide to have internet service at home. If dial up is all I can get, Id rather not.

It's a common, generally accepted practice in a lot of areas. Not only do you get to practice your sharpshooter skills, but it's sort of like that "Beware of Dog" sign, only a little more to the point lol!

Pocketplayer--just yankin your chain brother. we will welcome you with open arms. Tennessee is a great place to raise a family. The one thing that most rural folks here will not tolerate is people coming in from somewhere else and trying to change things. better that you try to adapt. Good luck and God Bless!

Maybe it's because I live here, but I don't construe most of these posts as dry Tennessee humor.
I've found that many Tennesseans have a knack for smiling while they tell you off. You might want to be aware of that.

Nobody said it wasn't true, just that we don't mean to hurt feelings, I think...

DSL is sort of like using an antenna, as I understand it, meaning your DSL speed is based on how far you are from the DSL transmitter, or whatever it's called. So if you're living way out in the boonies, you'll probably be too far from a transmitter to get decent DSL reception.
At least that's how the phone company explained it to me when I complained about my slow DSL speed when I lived in rural Knox County and was trying to save a few bucks. Now I use Comcast cable and LOVE it.
I'm pretty sure that the phone company will sell you DSL anyway, no matter where you live, but be warned that if you're out in the sticks it might not be much faster than normal dial-up.
