18

Age of Majority: 18 years. (T.C.A. sec 1-3-105; 37-1-102; 36-1-102) Children who are under court jurisdiction due to a delinquent adjudication prior to their 18th birthday remain under court jurisdiction until their 19th birthday if the court extends jurisdiction. (T.C.A. sec. 37-1-103)

Unless it's an emancipated minor then it seems it possible to be as young as 15.
WHAT MAKES EMANCIPATION IN A MINOR’S BEST INTEREST
Each judge will have a different approach to deciding whether emancipation is in the minor’s best interest. Generally, the judge will want to make sure that emancipation will not make the minor’s life worse. Determining factors may include:
•Will the minor graduate from high school or get a GED?
•Where will the minor live?
•How will the minor support himself/herself?
•If the minor has a child, how will he/she support the child?
•If the minor has a child, what kind of child care will be provided while the minor is at work or in school?

I was emancipated in Massachusetts at the age of 16. That was in the 70s so I am sure the judge wasn't using any guidelines. It was a massive mistake. It is one of the things that I wish I had never done. No one of that age has any idea what they are doing, although I sure thought I did at the time. And since I was a ward of the state - I was taken away from my parents at the age of 14 - the state was more than happy to save some money.

Wow, what a time to be on your own. I can just imagine what kind of trouble one could get into being real young and on your own in the 70's.

I didn't get into any trouble at all. Almost starved to death, though. No exaggeration. I ate about once a week for about six months.

I think the poster means how old do you have to be to contract as in sign a lease.
