Have you considered Southaven, MS, suburb of Memphis?
Hi,
I happened upon your post, as I was looking for relatives and ancestors in Tennessee. Southaven (DeSoto County), Mississippi, is a suburb of Memphis, and the airport in Memphis is in the southern part of the city. I have visited Memphis, and Nashville many times. Both have advantages of the city, but Southaven is the safest place to live near Memphis, probably less expensive than suburbs of Nashville. The schools in DeSoto County are good; it is a growing community; you could contact the county officials for growth in population, and probably be less expensive to live than other suburbs of large Tenn. cities. Actually, some people from the Gulf Coast are moving there for safety from storms and vandalism. I don't know about any gated communities. I am sure there are some in the Germantown area of Memphis. To live in one of these in Nashville, I think would be very expensive in a good part of the city. Franklin would be too far from airport, I think, but nice growing area.
Just thinking about flights from Memphis or Nashville -- basically, it's easier to get from Memphis to most of the places you mentioned than Nashville. It is expensive to fly from Memphis to Mississippi, but from Nashville, you would have to fly to Atlanta, then to Mississippi so time wise more wasted time. You would have to check on flights from the cities to the other areas. (Northwest flies direct to Chicago from Memphis.) But you might spend more time flying somewhere if you have to fly through Atlanta than it is worth. Actually, you can drive from Nashville to Birmingham - depends on where you are going in Alabama.
Good luck to you,
Ruth

Thank you for your feedback Ruth. I have been getting some great advice so far. I am just trying to find out from those who are familiar with the area so I can make an informed decision. Now I can see why the south has such a great reputation for kindness. I am leaning toward Nashville at this point due to safety and I hear it is the place to live in TN. I was able to get a flight schedule from the BNA website and found that I should be able to fly directly to the furthest places (N.O, Mem, Birmingham). The only places I could not find flights to out of BNA are Little Rock and Knoxville. However, I think I could make that work. I do see that homes in Nashville are more than Memphis but may be willing to spend more if it is worth it. There has been a lot of great feedback for Germantown and Collierville but I am somewhat concerned with the reputation of some of the nearby areas. Not sure if it is just talk or reality. Mississippi seams like a possible alternative so I will consider it further. Thanks again to everyone for the advice. Keep it coming!

With all respect I am not sure you are clear on what I was saying on flying vs. driving. I fly alot, but with all the hassles of getting to the airport, checking in, going through security, getting a rental car at your location, late flights, sitting next to the fat guy, etc. If you have a 4 hour drive it would be quicker and less stress just to do the drive. I wouldn't fly from Nashville to Birmingham or Memphis and not many people do, it's just not worth it anymore, these flights are designed for people connecting in a hub to fly elsewhere and are usually outrageously expensive (equal to flying cross country). Fly to New Orleans yes, but gee Memphis is like a two and a half hour drive away from Nashville, you wouldn't seriously fly would you?

Here is a new airpark just north of Knoxville in Grainger county. It will also have boat slips on the river and an 18 hole golf course. It's a beautiful area, mostly rural. Some of the lots are next to the landing strip so you can build your hangar right on to your house. I know a couple that just bought 1 or 2 lots and are getting ready to build.

I have heard many, many positive things about Franklin, TN. I know you want a gated community, but I don't think it would be necessary in such a good area. I couldn't live in one; its more trouble than it's worth. Check out the Murfreesboro area since its convenient to the airport. When I was there, I was really impressed with the Allisona, Triune, Eagleville area. Surely one of those would work for your family (especially if it does not have to be in a subdivision).

Murfreesboro would be IDEAL for you. You could get a lot more house in Murfreesboro than you could in Franklin or most of Williamson County. Your proximity to the airports is great and you will love our city! This one is a no-brainer.
